This review is a little delayed, but better late then never. A friend of mine invited me to The Compound a few Friday's ago for a performance by Teyana Taylor. (Yes, the infamous nipple action performance) It was a chance to check out a new spot & party in VIP with her crew. I'm down!! I arrived early and thought maybe I was in the wrong spot. I have only heard of this place by radio and was surprised to see that Friday nights are "Girls of the Night" as in, lesbians & their lady friends night. The ladies were hot even though the club wasn't very crowded. Their outdoor areas were closed off due to heavy rain. But the club does have a very nice ambiance to it. The dark purple, pink hue lighting with white walls makes the club feel sexy. They have girls in lingerie dancing kind of like go-go dancers. It was cute if you like go-go. The VIP is a little small but separated by a glass type of railing/wall. I like how the VIP wraps around the perimeter of the club. They do need to get better control over who's handing out VIP bands tho. I overheard a birthday girl complaining really hard that people were claiming to be on her list for VIP and getting bands even tho they weren't on her list. That could be an issue. The drinks were good & overpriced. But still good. I only needed 2 drinks & I was good. But that's what it should be if you're paying $12 for Henn & Coke. The music was so so. There was a mixture & like a lot of people said, the music got better later in the night. I believe the DJ was also playing tracks streaming from YouTube...ehh NO! Parking was free if you parked half a block away and walked back in gravel. Not fun in heels. But it saves you $20 from the closer lot. There doesn't seem to be much of a dress code either. There were 2 chicks in sweats, a beater and dunks. Maybe because it was lesbian night, I dunno. It was pretty casual tho which could work out in both ways. Overall, I managed to have a really good time. I'd probably try them again when it's not raining so I can see how the outdoor area really looks.

Located where Emeril's restaurant used to be, Aja is a high end lounge/restaurant - fairly new to the ATL scene.  Well, at least new to me!  After our dinner at Genki, we headed over to Aja (pronounced like Asia) for a drink. Since it was after 11pm, we had to pay $10 cover - I hate that! We sucked it up though, and had a good time.  On Saturday night, the place was jammin'!  We made our way around downstairs once we had drinks in hand and then explored the upstairs area as well.  Dance music played to add to the hip vibe.  It reminded me a lot of Tao in Vegas because of the décor, but also because of the people there... plenty of ladies in revealing tops and short skirts everywhere!  Great for people watching but probably better for those in the singles scene looking to meet someone. Service seemed friendly and I bumped into a handful of old friends as well.  If you're in the Buckhead area, go check out Aja... just go before 11pm if you can, to avoid that $10 cover charge!

When I first moved to the tenderloin I met a guy who purported himself as the official "King of the Tenderloin." At the time I was looking for a bar less dive-y than my usual spots (the Hemlock/Edinburgh/WhiskeyThieves/etc) so I took a shot and asked his advice. Well, I can safely say that every bar he recommended fell under the same dimmly lit bourgeoisie umbrella. Rye, Swig, Cantina; all with their dark nameless hole-in-the-wall facades, swanky candle lit wood/leather interiors, fancy expensive drinks with an even more expensive and vapid clientele. yuck!! After all the disappointment, I was wary of trying much else here in the neighborhood (for fear of either extreme, trashy or "classy") when last night there it was staring me right in the face... oh yeah! 222 hyde! last year my friends and i drunkenly found this place while searching for a decent halloween party and had a blast! and, if i remember correctly through the drunken haze, i spent some time there at a hip-hop thing with my boyfriend on my birthday in april! El 222 Club has so many wonderful things going for it: 1. a great interior vibe! i dig the small space, the "basement"/dance floor area, ample sitting long the wall, the red walls and exposed brick, everything! 2. fantastic martinis (and some fantastic happy hour prices i might add) 3. the closest thing to good pizza you'll find in the tenderloin 4. really fun place to dance and listen to awesome DJs and artists! they do a nice job of supporting local/underground hip-hop too :] 5. you can smoke inside. i dont know if thats official, or if that applies to tobacco as well, but hey, its something. so, complaints? 1. yikes! the location is the pits! super sketchy (aka you might get stabbed) on the outside and so far removed from anything decent that I forgot it was there. 2. for crying out loud, get a better beer selection! two beers? really?! PBR or Corona?? i understand its not one of "those" bars, but not everyone wants a cocktail. 3. last night after devouring my pizza i noticed, much to my horror, what appeared to be a cockroach scurrying around near the food supplies. Oh. My. God. not just once, but three separate times! i'm just hoping i'm severely mistaken on this one. anyways, 222 is exactly the type of atmosphere and vibe i was looking for in the neighborhood! I cant believe i forgot about it! I'll definitely be going back... when i have a bodyguard or able-bodied young man to walk me there of course.
