The only potential this place had was the "unknown" quality. I wouldn't have gone had it not been for an old friend who was performing downstairs. We went with someone who knew the owner, thankfully, because the "sweetheart" of a bouncer didn't seem to be letting anyone in. I used to work in a nightclub in Miami, so I understand the purpose of lines forming outside, it makes the place look "special". My issue with this was the weather factor. It was below 25 degrees out, and the crowd was getting angry when we showed up. I almost felt guilty skipping to the front and walking in (almost being the operative word here). We entered the lounge and walked down the dark hallway to the lower level (where the performance was going on). The place was packed! The ceilings were black and white striped and we felt as though we were walking through the pages of a Dr. Seuss book. The chick who was spinning was sick! She almost made me forget that I was dancing in a room surrounded by tools. That type of crowd was the reason I stopped going to places like that. I spent the majority of the concert in the front by the stage standing behind three women in their mid 50's (I believe we call them cougars) screaming at the singer. They were minutes away from throwing their panties at him. One of them smelled like a hair salon (potent dye scent), and the other like an ashtray, because she had been smoking inside the lounge (I'm a smoker and I couldn't take the asphyxiation). The drinks were pretty big, but I won't go back here anytime soon.

I can't recall the 1st time I visited Ms. Tootsies but I do know that after seeing their little brown bags and water bottles (for the tea) everywhere I went in philly, I knew I had to check it out. Being raised by two southern grandma's and a mother who can throw down in the kitchen yet "don't eat everybody's food", kinda makes you a soulfood snob and therefore I did not have high expectations for this or any other soulfood place for that matter. However I'm happy to say I was pleased my first visit. First off the entrepreneur in me is in love with their professionalism and how well they've used such a tiny space. Very clean always, not one detail has gone unnoticed from the bathroom in which I'm searching for a similar sink, to the Tootsie Rolls you receive with your check. The waitstaff is always friendly and when I feel like I've waited a bit too long to get a refill or whathave you, they're there with ice tea in hand ready to refill before I can point out the wait time. My first visit I orderd the Catfish, Candied Yams, & Mac and cheese. Very good all three and enough for two meals. The reason I don't a 5 star is because the cheesy delicious mac and cheese that I loved upon first visit just doesn't seem to be the same now, and that's after comparing 2-3 visits oppose to it just be an off day. The meats are good but not well seasoned, that I let slide due to the fact that the restaurant is serving so many people when opened that that may be what works for them for the sake of those who would not like a lot of seasoning. Plus no one makes better chicken than mom so it would just be wrong to fault them for that. And I can order the candied yams one visit and they're like wow I want more and come back and it's just not the same that next visit. So it's pretty good but can be hit or miss. Yet everything taken into consideration food, decor, staff, etc. I'm happy to pay my money to go there. Lastly as I said it is small so if you plan on going especially on weekends (which I think they're only operating weekends now-do not go by me however) use wisdom and either go right when they open if planning to dine in, or have somewhere else to go in case the wait time is a long one. There is absolutely nowhere to wait inside of the restaurant and you will find yourself frustrated if you do not plan accordingly. However they have the larger location next door now, haven't been yet so can't vouch for everything there.
