There are two things to consider about this place. On one hand, Bootie is a great dance party. Fun people and good music. I've been twice and have had a blast on the dance floor. On the other hand, the intangibles and policies of this place suck. Specifically, the fact that this place is a cash bar is ridiculous. The $3 ATM downstairs makes things even worse. But besides all that, the worst thing is that they charge $3 for bottled water and THEY WILL NOT SERVE YOU TAP WATER IF YOU DON'T HAVE CASH! I was drunk and asked for some water because I was starting to feel woozy. The bartender asked me if I had three bucks, and I said no, so he said "Sorry, can't help you". Seriously, WTF?! Unless these policies change, my next Saturday night dance party will be at 330 Ritch.

Does anyone remember Fabulous Juan? I am SO dating myself here. (Ha! There's a double meaning there, as this has long been one of my favorite places to go alone.) Anyway, in the mid-nineties, before I turned 21, I used to come here on Sundays for free group swing dancing lessons. Yeah, that was me with the shaved head, glitzy costume jewelry, & the bright lemon cocktail dress. Fabulous Juan was/is this older, Austrian (?) cross-dresser, who called us all dahlinks and, who really was a phenomenal dancer, as well as a very clear instructor. He/She always wore these amazing vintage evening gowns, with sparkly spaghetti straps, with her hair swept in a graceful updo. Sadly, I only did this for a few months and the lessons didn't exactly stick. I only remember muttering "1-2, 1-2, back step," bonking elbows and getting my toes stepped on all the while. But then, after the lesson, a live swing band would start up and the "real" dancers would start arriving. This was when being a girl really paid off, as I quickly learned that a novice can do surprisingly well with a strong and experienced lead. (They have to be strong because otherwise I keep accidentally trying to lead - I want to spin NOW!) Did you notice how I sort of skimmed over the fact that I was under 21? The big trick was to get in before 10pm when the doorman would begin checking IDs. Once in, we didn't leave, and then we could dance & have some drinks - such a rare and wonderful thing when you're 20! Now, I've seen them check IDs of the patrons already inside at 10pm, so don't you youngins go thinking you can break the law! There are some marvelous, some average, and some not-so-great shows here. Lavay Smith, of course is a great classic. Minnie Driver and MC Frontalot are some of the recent good shows I've seen here. Tickets are priced well, drinks are average, the atmosphere is a unique velvet-walled red boudoir feeling. If you've never been here, it certainly is one of the San Francisco old schools that you really ought to check out.

Tough to get in but once you do, it's almost always a good night. Good looking crowd and a great vibe... drinks are expensive but reasonable.
