chances are if you're going here, especially on a Monday night, you already know a lot of the club/bar industry people and are there to party with them. I'd say thats the best night. it's not filled with annoying seemingly underage kids. doesn't open till about 12, and it's pretty small. but there are two spaces too it. top floor where most of the dancing goes on. around the tables. and where most of the smoking goes on too. and not just ciggarettes. The owner smokes, so he doesn't seem to mind. Also it seems at a lof of clubs, if you're willing to shell out a couple hundred or more, theyll throw in a ciggarette or two free. downstairs is more of a small college bar feel. little booths to sit in which is nice, if theyre not already crowded. the bartenders can have a bit of an attitude. and seem to inform you about their prices, if they think you are strapped for cash. informing, but kinda degrading. also informing me on tipping them when I paid for an all you can drink keg. which I usually served myself. I asked for a birthday cake shot on my birthday. The bartender charged me 12 dollars for it. it didn't even taste like it was supposed to. at all. a relatively nice place to throw a birthday party. a group of 6 or more 300 bucks isnt too bad for table service and ketel one is a good vodka! the owner is pretty gracious, almost always there checking on things. I was there one night when the power went off. that was a bit stressful and embarassing. especially when you need to navigate the dark staircase to exit because the main exit is locked electronically. and after you spend time and money in a place and have nowhere to go. I feel bad for those who bought tables that night. all in all its not a bad place to start and meet up with people who can take you other places.

Everything in moderation. That's the motto I have tried to live by.** That is, until February 2008. Could I possibly visit 111 Minna more often in one month's time than I have in the past 20-something years? Yes, it appears so. Once a week for the last month with another visit to come. It's a nice little venue with two areas [each with their own bar], separable by barrier. Interesting events around the clock, day or night. Art changes weekly, so there is always something new to see. $2/item coat check. Cash only, but there is an ATM. The man at the door does his job and checks my identification every single time. You would think that he would recognize me by now, but alas... I am nobody, a nobody who will frequent this place for the art, music, fashion, friends. Still, a nobody. When will I become somebody? ** exception to the motto: Certain times of the month when indulgence in everything sweet and then everything salty seems to be KEY. Hello, chocolate [Ferrero Rocher, especially]. Hello, Kettle Chips. Hello, Reese's peanut butter cups. Oh, and on jumping... No moderation necessary on that one.

FTR, I wouldn't know authentic Ethiopian food if it knocked me upside the head with an empty tej bottle. I will say that I definitely liked my doro wat, and there was no shortage of spice. The service was fantastic- we were seated immediately, and our waitress was awesome all night- very attentive without smothering us. It happened to be Latin Night when we were there, and Mucho Axe was playing. It was too loud for conversation at the table, but the music was good, and the room was set up pretty well for it. My only complaint was that they were out of damn near every bit of alcohol- one tap available (out of about eight), and we apparently got the last bottle of tej. I won't mark down for that because they had some street fair this past weekend. Seems fair enough. All in all, I'd be happy to come back.
