the upstairs hall totally reminds me of the fillmore in SF. came here for the nouvelle vague concert on january 23, 2010. (it turns into a dance club at night; seemed average when i peeked in after the concert.) the staff is new york rude and the coat check is a rip ($4 for coats, but $8 for "larger items", the latter of which is left up to the discretion of the person doing the checking; a medium-sized backpack was deemed to be large). the acoustics leave something to be desired, although i'm not too sure if that's necessarily the fault of the hall or if it's just because i was standing right at the stage. for this concert, it was no re-entry privileges and doors were at 6:30 even though the concert didn't start until 7:45. they don't tell you that until it's almost too late, so if you're coming for a concert, you may wish to call ahead just to make sure you're not sitting around waiting forever.

Kat's Cafe reminds me of a place you see in the movies... it's a "hidden little Atlanta gem" and I absolutely loved my experience. For those who truly enjoy the art of "raw" performances and intimate spaces then this place should be added to your list of serious MUST DOS. I only got a glass of wine and that was around $8.00. So prices are reasonable. And Kat says that she rarely charges an entry fee, 90% of the time admission is free. Support this husband and wife team!!!! They actually get the concept for small spaces that have quality atmosphere and entertainment. Love it!

So in spite of all the horrible reviews this place got, my friend and I went last night to Ruby Skye. This was only my second clubbing experience and I have to say... I think clubbing at Ruby Skye is overrated. But this is stemming from a deep loathing of getting dressed up on a cold SF night, paying too much money, and having to endure the pain of high heels for more than 2 hrs. But back to Ruby Skye. This is my first rateclub review, so I'll just give a play by play of my night. First of all, my friends and I got there around 10:30-11pm and the place was more like a high school prom. The dance floor was completely empty and everyone was just lining the perimeter. It was like everyone was 15 and awkward all over again. However, my friends and I were already really drunk from pre-partying on the way (me especially since I already had low expectations due to rateclub reviews) so we proceeded to dance our drunken little butts off. This was the only reason this club was any fun: Drunk and with really wonderful friends. After that, people started to work up the nerve to start dancing. I think my friends and I should've gotten paid because this place was lame before we started dancing. So I think if you want to 'experience a club', this would not be the place. There is no variety in the music and I am not picky, so this was a surprise. The drinks are rather overpriced (although props to nice bartenders), but I'm a cheap college student. There is no goddamn place to sit when your feet are dying, AND the crowd is really inconsistent. Of course you have the usual party nerds with glow sticks and moves from 1992, but I noticed how much of a sausage fest this place is. And seriously, the girls were all better looking than the men. The go-go dancers was a nice touch, but I was just in Lake Tahoe and even they were better than a SF club. All in all, I would have much rather worn my usual tank top-jeans and gone bar hopping with my wonderful friends in Cal. At least this way, I don't HAVE to be drunk out of my mind to have a good time. I guess my advice would be (if still interested in clubbing) is to find a place that suits you and your friends in terms of music, crowd, atmosphere, etc. Ruby Skye is too stereotypical and therefore doesn't provide the full experience. two stars: 1 for nice bartenders, 1 for awesome flashing lights that kept me occupied when I've had too much.
