by Celia S. on I had to give this place one star because I can't save the review without putting in a star. But I really give this place no stars since I was not able to try it out. My boyfriend and I had a special anniversary evening planned. We had a deal where I would pick a place for drinks and he would dinner. I choose Le Club for drinks. I checked out Rateclub and their website to see when they opened. Come to find out that when we go there at 6:45 on Sat night they were not going to be open until 8:00. The door man had said they changed their hours. Rateclub says they open at 5:30 and their website says 6:30. PLEASE take the time to update (at least your website) if you change your hours. We wasted a cab ride over and then had to spend another 15 mins trying to catch one to go somewhere else. I was very disappointed.
by Jc Xue on Johnny Brenda's is my happy place. Not only do my awesome friends live right down the block, but it's also been such a great space to watch some of my favorite performances in the city. Location is not ideal, but Girard is growing on me no doubt (especially when friends give me a ride out there). Beers are cheap and tasty, bartenders are nice enough, and it's spacious enough for everyone to have their own social experiences (both upstairs and downstairs). I've only eaten fries here, which were fine, but not really comparable to Monk's or Good Dog as far as bar fries go. It's nice that they have so many veggie options on their menu but I can't stay I've tried anything. But let's be honest - I don't come here for the food or drinks. I come because the space upstairs is awesome and I love being so close to bands I really love. Now to refresh my memory and give you a taste of who I've seen there..... the roster is as follows: Fuyiya & Miyagi, Headlights, Caribou, Fleet Foxes, & the Rosebuds. Oh yeah and one warning: their shows always start really late & there's generally a fairly large gap between the opener and main act (not that that's unusual around Philly).
by Sarah S. on There's a reason why all those little white men in Rosa Mexicana's fountain appear to be swan diving to their death. I suspect it's because they tried this "Upscale, Authentic Mexican Cuisine" (pardon me while I snort) and they couldn't bear to go on living. Fortunately I survived to share my tale. After the horror that was Geisha House (and despite my extreme loathing for all things Atlantic Station), we headed to Rosa Mexicana for dinner. Halfway through a pomegranate margarita, I requested spicy guacamole. The wee man pushing the guacamole cart gave a sinister smirk and hooked our guac up with several large, heaping spoonfuls of fresh jalapeno (seeds and all). I'm no sissy when it comes to spicy--I thought this kicky green goo was the best part of an otherwise OK tasting meal until.... dum dum dum DUUUUM! Margarita slapped jalapeno's hand, jalapeno slapped super greasy, sub-par carne asada's hand and Sarah B was tag teamed, effective this a.m. As far as work productivity goes, mine is negative 50-million and dropping. I've accomplished nothing today b/c I've spent most of this glorious Monday swinging my long-ish legs to and fro on what could be the world's tallest handicap toilet. On the positive side, I did manage to beat the previous high score on my cellphone game, Bubblesmile. And I also managed to put Rosa Mexicana's food EXACTLY where it belongs.
