by Dale Austino on I used to really like this place. It was always fun... cool crowd, no Hollywood pretentiousness. In groups of 3-5 people, I never spent more than $120 for 2-3 bottles, and our waiters have always been cool and friendly. We always are satisfied. Then last time we went, things went bad. Our waiter, CoCo, was actually really cool, and I feel bad for him because he kinda got shafted. It was the first time I went without any Korean speaking friends and we kinda got gipped. Earlier I talked to the manager on the phone and he said it would be $270 a table and I said that would be fine. When we got 2 bottles per table (2 tables = 4 bottles), I was really excited that we had gotten such a good deal... too good be to be true right? Well it WAS. At closing time they told us our bill was $980. Since we accepted the second bottles they brought to each table, we had to pay extra. And on top of that, they charged us $100 for the fruit!! I'd been there 3 times before and we'd never been charged for the fruit before. They usually just give it to you, I guess they figured they could rip us off because we don't speak Korean. Afterwards, we were trying to argue with the manager about what happened and he refused to negotiate. Instead, he had us surrounded by 4 security guards and they just told us if we didn't pay the whole amount, he would call the police. I was adamant about paying less, because we had been told one price and charged another. If they had actually told us the 2nd set of bottles wasn't included before they just brought them over, I would have had a chance to refuse them. We didn't even touch one of the bottles. So he called the police. When we told him to leave the police out of this, and that it was unreasonable for us to be arrested when we are actually STAYING to pay the bill, he had the security guards walk us to the bar. They told us to pay the full amount ($490 each!!!) and forget about the tip. When we pulled out credit cards, they asked to see our ID's. I showed mine to them, but they told me "Give us your ID" and I refused, saying "NO, you can see my name and my picture and it matches the credit card, why do you have to take it?" They grabbed it from me and walked away with my ID and wouldn't give it back!!!!!! Then the security guards started escorting us to the exit. When we got to the front door, another waiter or manager guy approached us and gave our IDs back, but shoved these photocopies in our face. He told us "Now we know who you are!" I don't know what the hell they are trying to do, but I'm guessing I'm banned from Le Cercle now. I totally feel hustled and violated. They had no right to take my ID from me, and it was poor business practice for them to refuse to negotiate when they had provided misinformation. Prior to this last experience, I would definitely have given 5 stars. I am going to give them 2 stars out of generosity, because it really is possible to have a good time there, but I seriously got screwed this last time.
by molly f. on Stumbled into PURE after running into one of the clubs promoters walking his dogs late at night on our way home from dinner in old city...he was absolutely charming and invited our group of couples to meet him at PURE for some late night fun. Not quite ready to end the evening, we accepted his invitation and found ourselves in a sea of techno and late night festivities. DC gay bars really just don't compare- If I was a gay, I would be a moth to a flame. We ended up having a pretty wild night here, dancing until the music stopped, but it was a great end to a great weekend. We were so grateful for our hosts thoughtful invitation to explore a different side of philadelphia nightlife!
by M S. on Solid venue. I've definitely seen some good shows there (New Pornographer's and (ex-roommate) Ted Leo). I did have one mishap in the neighborhood after one Bimbo's visit. 2 gang bangers decided to step out of their corvette and talk smack to the 7 guys I was with. No joke. It was a bizarre scene. So, good venue, but be careful crossing the street.
