by Val Ahyet on How could you make use of a piece of junk floating on the Hudson River? By making it into a bar!! I love the summer breeze, the sunset, the chillaxed atmosphere, and the crowd. It's so chill that you can sit with a friend for hours on that one Corona and lime, and not be shooed away by some pretentious server. Here, self serve is key. Here, nobody cares. Here, it is not pretentious. As advice, do not drink too much or you will find yourself having a lot of trouble wobbling to the bathroom. Also, the restrooms are a far walk, through another ship...wreck. Consder yourself warned, ladies. PS - Almost forgot, this place is a horror to get to since it's all the way on the west side. Take a cab here and then stay a few hours because it's a bit of a stretch from civilization.
by Nina B. on I'll probably say things that others have said before me, but hey...nothing's wrong with backup. I invited my posse to fill the 4 other seats I reserved at Tangerine for Restaurant Week. I picked it because 1) http://Opentable.comranks them $$$$ on the price scale, so I knew we'd be getting a good deal with the $35 prix-fixe menu. 2) I've been wanting to try a variety of the Stephen Starr restaurants. 3) The menu looked good, although I didn't know what would be featured on the RW menu. 4) I had heard great things about the decor (from rateclubsers, thank you very much). Now for my experience. Upon walking into the restaurant, I had to stop and allow my eyes to adjust to the moody lighting, which was, besides moody, incredibly sexy. I had my boyfriend in tow, and while we sipped (delicious) drinks in the cushy low seats of the lounge, I secretly hoped the others our party would cancel so that he and I could have a romantic evening. (No dice; they showed, which was fine.) The lounge and the drinks are where the majority of the stars in this review come into play. If I go back, it will be for drinks only. Okay, and maybe dessert because my dessert (chocolate cake with almond paste and vanilla ice cream) was off the chain and an amazing rebuttal to an entirely mediocre entree.
by Lamar Hartwick on Have never been here on a Friday or Saturday night, since I refuse to wait in line anywhere only to be smushed in a crowded club. Nor have I ever eaten here. I don't particularly pay much attention to the patrons, and could care less if they're oil-wealth or Euro-poseurs. For me, this place is all about the design and the music. I can't say that the modular furniture setup and roll-away upholstered benches are a paragon of comfort and functionality, but at least it's something different, deliberate and slightly adventurous--which you don't see much of 'round here. As noted previously, the bathrooms are really cool. On Thursday nights (which is when I like to go), the DJ's play fantastic music--it's fresh and feels new to me, though I'm sure some would categorize it as derivative of pre-disco, and thus pooh-pooh it. Sound system is very good, dim lighting make all us ungainly types on the other side of the river seem more attractive, bartenders are friendly to me, never got any attitude from the bouncer, and if there's a dress code, I haven't seen it enforced. Again, I only recommend this place on a non-Friday or Saturday--I've seen the lines to get in; no thank you.
