by Joshua D. on 3 stars for the restaurant. nice staff. decent food. funny tacky decor. 0 - ZERO STARS for SAMBA ROOM. THey advertise a "Free Samba class 8-9" thats a lie. If you ask when the free samba class will start - the organizer will tell you that its typically 9-10. Thats also a lie. THe samba dancers typically dont even arrive until 1030 (I discovered this later by asking people around the restaurant). The hand written sign at the door says samba night starts at 10PM. THe organizer says the "free" class is supposed to be included with the door price... how could the class start at 9PM if the event starts at 10? LIES LIES AND MORE LIES On the night I visited this place it was DEAD. D.E.A.D. DEAD. THe organizer said that the samba teacher was "sick" and that only one dancer would show up. She was unapologetic, unembaressed and demanded $10 per person to see the one samba dancer. Even though we just had dinner.
by Andrew Krimple on Ok. I used to love the Phoenix. Now I'm not so sure. Not many hotels greet you like a criminal when you walk through the doors. Sign here to agree to no parties or there will be a huge fine. Give me your ID's so we can make photocopies (I was told this was because the hotel is a block away from a federal building). While the staff are cool, the entire check in process makes you feel like a teenager and your parents are telling you to behave even before you do anything. Oh and the hotel will automatically slap a $1 a day fee to your room as part of their "charity" to inform musicians that loud music can damage their hearing. Alex, I'd like What is a dumbass Charity for $200? The Phoenix hotel should note that it's not really their philanthropic effort if I'm the one paying for it. Anyway they do let you opt out, but frankly give us a list of charity's and let us pick a more suitable one than def rockers. We had one of the larger rooms with a balcony. These rooms are lighter so if you want to sleep in stay away because these rooms are pretty bright. The rooms are nice and the colors are awesome. The artwork however were splashed with fluids and hadn't been cleaned. Bedding is comfortable. No the other major problem of the hotel is the connected bar - and I quote the "Bambuddha Lounge is a sexy nightclub, lounge, bar and restaurant in downtown san francsico". In reality it's a bunch of douches who don't have to sign the we won't make noise clause sitting outside your room poolside and smoking cigarrettes and carrying on very loud and clear douche conversations. So while hotel guests are forced to sign agreements not to misbehave the bar guests can be total dingos. They do push them back into the bar at 10 pm but then they just stand out front of the bar and make more noise than a thousand monkeys with trash can lids. Listen folks if the bar is going to be open till 2 then allow your guests to go take late swims or sit in the courtyard. And yes, people want rest. Then instead of warning musicians about the dangers of loud music, why not give checking in guests a pair of ear plugs? Welcome to the Phoenix, it's gonna be f'ing loud. Oh and if you have a balcony room plan on the guy in the building across the way with the zoom lens on his camera trying to take some photos if you wander around your room nakked. Just don't say you weren't warned when you appear on some website naked and heading to the bathroom. Will I stay there again? Probably. But the Phoenix must learn it can't be all things. If you want the hotel to be quiet then get rid of the douche bar, otherwise embrace your wild image and give everyone some earplugs and let the party start.
by J J. on If you want to dance, this is the place to go. I've been here numerous times, and I always have a fun time. It's small but a guaranteed good time. Drinks are reasonably priced, and the cover is only $5. Bathrooms are a bit small and dirty.
