It is a rare occasion to get me out of Downtown, for much of anything - but when a friend has a request for a restaurant, on his Birthday, I go. So, off we go to the Domain to eat at Gloria's. The menu states the food is Salvadorian/Tex-Mex. We start with Guacamole - pretty good, generous portion for 4 of us. The black bean dip was especially good (I can't explain that, it's mashed black beans, after all). The salsa was fresh, chunky with tomatoes, cilantro and garlic - basic but good. I chose for my entree, the Salmon. Which the menu lead me to believe that it would be wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked to perfection. In actuality, the salmon was grilled and placed on a banana leaf on my plate and SMOTHERED with ancho sauce, served with a small side of white rice shaped like a 1 cup measuring cup, an ample portion of freshly steamed vegetables and some fried plantains. Let me get back to the Salmon. Once I removed all of the unnecessary amount of ancho sauce, the salmon tasty a bit too fishy (maybe the reason for so much sauce on it). The vegetables were good, fresh not frozen and steamed perfectly. The plantains were delicious, and a much welcomed addition to help fend off the abundance of ancho sauce on the fish. All of the dishes were served on very large square white plates. Much too large for the table, and for the amount of food on them. I mentioned to the waiter, who was very attentive, friendly and unaware of what is in a Blue Hawaiian, that it was a friends Birthday. At the end of the meal, several staff came out singing and presented a lovely slice of chocolate flan (tasty too). Get this the waiter then takes a spoon and feeds the first bite to the Birthday boy! That was weird. The Mexican martini's didn't suck. Will I go back? Not a chance! The waiter graciously took our picture after the meal. When preparing to take the picture he said "everyone say Gloria's is great", no one said a word. We asked for another picture to be taken, I then said "everyone say Gloria's is OK" we all laughed and got a good photo. One good thing, the seating. I loved the cushions in the booths and the chairs were padded as well. I was at least comfortable for the 2 hours at Gloria's.

Busby's East!!! As a Busby's fan, the only thing I can complain about the venue vs. Busby's West is the food menu choices...they are more limited in the kitchen and definitely not as tasty. Regardless, I still love the place. I love the fact that it's a sports bar with sports games and games for the boys to enjoy, while the girls can get away into the club portion and dance the night away. This is the exact reason why I decided to host my last birthday party here. I got in contact with the manager (or one of the managers), and he quickly penciled in the date for bottle service. I had to call and confirm as the date got closer. I was able to reserve the stage area inside the club for my friends and with the bottle service. Originally he said he would be able to let only 4 people in without cover per bottle (it was on a Saturday night). I told him that I was expecting a lot of people to show up at different times. He said to just give him a list and if everyone's cool, he can do his best to get people in. Arriving on my big night, everything was set up accordingly, without any drama and the cocktail waitress was very nice. The place started filling up and my guests happily arrived one by one. No one had to pay at the door and I didn't have any drama with people stranded outside (unlike other "clubs" I've had birthdays at). I was thoroughly impressed. The night was great and everyone had a splendid time. Other nights I've been here and always had a great time as well. The bartenders (when they are not swamped) are fun to chat with and easy to look at. I've never had any trouble getting in here...I do try to get there just before 10 to avoid any cover on the weekends or arrive fashionably late, talking my way in with the bouncer to have us skip the fee. The crowd here is generally better than Santa Monica...I think...or maybe not. The reason for not having 5 stars? The lack of satisfaction I get from their menu, the location is mid-Wilshire, far from freeways, other bars and freeways...and other bars.
