I went here on a wednesday night some years back. I remember the bartender drooling over my pretty lady friend. He was nice enough to give us (me by association) some free shots throughout the night. It was the best of times, it was the greatest of times... until I had to work the next morning that is. Flash forward to the following saturday. For some reason myself and my crew are back at this same bar. Coincidentally the same bartender is there, but he's not working. This time he's at Jakes to party. Eventually he tells us about this private party area downstairs. Things start getting a little hazy from here. Dancing, karaoke, open bar, more dancing, bad shots, slight black out and then we decide to drag ourselves home. We come upstairs and everyone is gone, bar stools are stacked and it's 7am. Holy adventure.

Waiting 45 minutes for a table when we had a reservation started us off on the wrong foot with this restaurant. Add to that the fact that the waiting space was so small a couple of us stood outside in the cold and you have a disastrous night. The saving grace of the evening was the fact that the food was pretty darn good. My wife and I shared a cherry, goat cheese, arugula salad which was very nice with a terrific dressing. I had the pork roast and she had the crab with pasta. All of it was good though the sauce on the pork was a tad saltier than I liked. Overall, we'll probably go back on a week night to avoid the crowds. But the fact that we waited so long with neither an apology or a glass of wine was disappointing. Did I mention they have a pretty good wine list?

Latest Dish is, by far, one of my favorite restaurants in the South Street area.  After living in the area for about 3 years now, and Philadelphia for another 2 years, I've not stepped into a restaurant that epitomizes the "triple threat" of dining--good food, good service, and of course, good liquor. Let me caveat my review, though, with the note that the ambiance of Latest Dish may definitely not suit all.  I, for one, love it!  It's casual, friendly, open, and definitely funky.  With a club attached to it and the young/fresh feel, I think most older diners would pass.  I once recommended the place to a colleague who was about 20 years my elder, and she opted for a quieter place--to each his own. Nevertheless,  back to the restaurant. Though contained in a fairly tight space, I've never once passed these doors to see an empty dining room.  And even more, the bar is usually lined with friendly, talkative Philadelphian's just enjoying the bartender's energy!  I love it! The beer list is expansive--and I'm still working my way to try all their beers--lucky me, since I am only a hop and skip away.  That aside though, I absolutely love their wine list!  I am the biggest fan of their Willi Haag riesling, and I've not been able to find any other restaurant in the city area to have it--nor the wine and spirits store, at that.  Paired with any light dish, I can definitely finish an entire bottle all my own. The staff is superb!  They are friendly and always available for service, but not too overbearing that you feel you are being watched like a hawk.  Service, every time I've dined, has been quick, but even on a busy night, I've not been rushed out of my table.  They allow me to eat at my own pace, and I leave when I'm ready.  The service is just as close to perfect at the bar, so if you see tables are full, don't overlook dining directly at the bar!  The bartender is always attuned to what you need, and it feels a little bit like you're being served by a friend bc you'll almost ALWAYS strike up conversation and the meal is just icing on the cake. Now, let's talk food.  Meat, fish, greens--you name it, it's good.  I absolutely love their lemongrass mussels--it's a perfect starter with a light blend of spices.  It's clear enough to cleanse your palette for your main dish.  For the non-seafood goers, the duck eggrolls are deeeelish!  They are fried just right and do not taste overly oily.  I've been weary to eat this all too often, because duck can be one of the fattiest poultry, but the meat in these eggrolls never fail to be lean! YUM! From the calamari, to the tilapia, to the red snapper.  From the pork loin to the chicken breast.  The meats and fish are always moist, never dry.  In all my visits, I've not had a tough piece to chew, and I keep coming back for seconds! The spices are always just right, nothing is ever too spicy, too salty, or too sweet, or even worse, too bland.  And definitely don't forget to ask your server what drink they think would complement your meal...they are always willing to offer their suggestions, and I've not had one complaint yet. Oooo, this is making me hungry!  Perhaps, I'll drop in tonight! Enjoy diners, this is one gem that you won't want to miss!
