Rolled in here on a Saturday night with a group of 7 to celebrate my friend's birthday after treating her to a dinner at Buddakan across the street (which I also reviewed here on rateclubs). Factoring in geographical convenience from dinner, the japanese-decor-large-room-dancers-swinging-from-th e-ceiling tourist appeal for the two california girls in my group, and the fact that the birthday girl primarily likes hip hop, Hiro fit the bill nicely. Getting in wasn't too much of a problem. I guest listed our group for reduced admission for guys and free for ladies, but we ended up getting a bottle primarily so we could all have somewhere to sit and somewhere to put our coats and the girls' bags lol. If you are a guy (like me) and want to avoid entry hassles (like me), then make sure at least half your group is thin, well-dressed, good looking girls, preferably blonde (like our girls were, 2 of whom are blonde). If you can't do this, then bring a lot of money for bottle service. Or have a good hookup (but then again, if you have good hookups to the NYC nightlife, then you should already have good looking lady friends). Drink prices are standard MePa/Chelsea prices, and in this era of the internet, you should know this already. There are places in the city where the drinks are 70% cheaper. Why hang out in places where you'll end up unhappy with how much you spend? Doesn't make any sense. Anyway, if it was just me I'd probably downgrade this to 3 stars because I'm not a big hip hop fan and getting a little too old for this scene, but what was more important was that birthday girl had a blast so the club accomplished it's job and everybody was happy. yay

Why I like this place (dinner) - The bartender down stairs was very friendly. - Hangar steak for less than the price of 2 Extra Value Meals - Champagne mint vinaigrette is wonderful - Two of my favorite foods (Duck and Bacon) on same dish (pita pizza) - White bean hummus - Bottled water for $.50 (to aid water shortage, alternate to tap) - You can go for a late dinner and see the American to European/South American patron "shift change". - Great chocolate truffles I will be back.

Maybe its because it is the weekend of Pride. Maybe because I don't look like a gay man (though, i really...really...wish i did sometimes). But, this place did not seem to be friendly to the random bar-goer on Polk Street. I got some really harsh looks when slipping between folks. BUT, the bar tender was fabulous and gave us directions to the Walgreen's down the street. Loved the decor and loved the ambiance. I was sad that I felt so unwelcome :(
