I first found Sugar Cafe because I was looking for a chill place that served liquor on a Sunday night, and Sugar fit perfectly! Flash forward two years and now I work nearby so my needs have shifted from Sunday Night Drinking to Monday Morning Coffee. Sugar Cafe has fantastic coffee and a small is only $1.35 - which by San Francisco standards means its practically free.

I have mixed feelings about Parish and somewhat of a love-hate relationship with the restaurant. Love the Market downstairs, but not so much the restaurant upstairs. I want to gush over how much I love the Market, but let me preface with the fact that the last time we had dinner at Parish upstairs, we had shitty, shitty service. I have a few rules regarding service--I will forgive crappy service if you a) are super sweet, b) are super busy or c) keep bringing my guests and me our alcoholic beverages. Since none of the above happened and we had a reservation on a dismal Monday night in an empty restaurant, I am still sore from a mediocre dining experience. The servers forgot drinks, confused entrees, never even brought an entree, ignored my request for a manager, and put gratuity on our check without telling us. After years in the hospitality industry, my friends and I are quite forgiving, but even we were peeved by the end of the night. And when I wrote to their management, we did not even get a response. Not an apology or acknowledgement. So, if you are looking for a positive dining experience, the restaurant itself is gorgeous but food and service are subpar for what it should be... The Market, on the other hand, is charming, fresh, and tasty. I am in love with this spot, especially the large communal table and the doors that open out to the patio. My favorites include the turkey cobb salad and the roast beef sandwich. The Market also has a great variety of sweet treats. I am a total sucker for this place--and normally, based on our previous experiences at Parish upstairs, I would boycott Parish altogether--but I am smitten. Go to Parish Market, forget about Parish upstairs...

skip it. Leave them to what they're good at, drinks. If you want to push it; the appetizers are doable as well. Dinner, barely edible, yuck. We had the portabello mushroom & the ribs, or should I say the salt & the fat. & let's not even approach the "decor." It's a club, it's obvious, the attempt to turn it into an upscale place to eat...sad.
