I tried Tao for the first time recently.  We had made a reservation for 9.  We were seated adjacent to the huge Buddha in the main dining area.  Our server was attentive and the food was really good. The prices are on the more expensive side.  All the dishes we ordered were fresh, tasty and came out hot.  They also have a great list of speciality drinks. The ladies' restroom is very clean and each stall had a mini jukebox above the toilet. Just a fun fact!

Casino. Remember the scene where Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are standing at the local bar and Joe proceeds to stab a patron at the bar over and over again with an ink pen? This cafe/bar is invocative of this scene.  50's.  Retro, replete with the fuzzy swirlings brough on by crimson velvet wallpaper and face rock decorating the facade of the walls.  Even the chairs and tables echoed this: older wood furniture from the retro period.  I clinked my beer bottle down on the table and it shook slightly due to an uneven leg. I've had basic experiences with Ethiopian and Eritrean food and each time, the experience was mediocre.  Not sure if it had to do with the fact that I'm a sucker for spices and savory flavors.  Thai.  Korean.  Chinese.  Fusion. Even traditional stews cooked meticulously by my grandmother went slighly untouched. We ordered the meat plate, since I was craving protein.  The previous several days resulted in a lack of procuring a good meat dinner and W probably felt the strains of this. "I need meat!" We ordered a double order of the meat combination, since the bartender/waiter pointed out that the portion for a single to not be very large. Our dish came out on a large round platter, accompanied by the traditional starchy rounds of injera (my experiences with this have been varying).  One place I went to delivered the injera slightly bitter and acidic.  A sign that it was left too long during the leavening process. Two small mounds of mixed greens and three specific stewed (Doro Watt, a chicken stewed dish, supposedly spicy but it really was not and came with one boiled egg, even though we ordered two orders..hmmm.  However, definitely, the most tastiest of the items on the platter.  The lamb saute was not very flavorful and the lamb either stale/old, since it reeked of mutton and left an odd aftertaste on my tongue. I'm not sure that I was moved to the point of feeling like I'd hit another one of these joints again soon.  Granted, I was full after inhaling most of the injera in addition to my Stella, but honestly, for a double order of the meat combination, it was not too reflective of the costs associated with the dish. Regardless, the experience was that of casual foodstuff before hitting a show at the Independent.  Would I come back?  Maybe, if I was going to keel over. Better representation elsewhere, or I'd go for some good Pakistani instead.

Total blast here.  Cute boys, good music, sexy dramatic space, but small pricey drinks.   Whatever.  I'm still going back the next Sunday night I'm there.
