by Libby Boisseau on When reviewing a venue like Bimbo's, I have to reverse my usual rating formula. Typically, I look for reasons why an establishment should be given stars. In Bimbo's case, what could possibly make me pull one off? Non-acceptance of credit cards in 2008 is absolutely preposterous, but that little detail only takes away .5 stars. So we're rounding up. But then... drinks are expensive as hell. That's a bummer. A real bummer. The rest of it is pretty cool however. The deep reds, the pin-hole light above the bartenders table on the venue floor, the sound, the ice in the urinals and the overall classy feeling of an obviously very old venue. Something about Bimbo's makes me wait for the bartender to hand me my drink and say, "Your money is no good here Andrew... drinks on the house".
by Vishal D. on Came for the food and the party- It's your standard swanky modern Indian spot. They do pack on the spice if you ask them to which is nice. My entree- the Hyderabadi murgh, wasn't great or anything, but otherwise people mostly enjoyed the food. Around 11 PM they move the tables aside, shut the lights and the DJ comes on. Drinks here are $10-$11 no matter what it seems. So at those prices don't water them down. The dance floor crowd was a little unorganized. Lot of people bumping into each other to get to the bar. Must've been hit in the back 100 times. Kind of like a disorganized Indian wedding. I'm surprised there was no fight.
by frisco j. on remember the old coca cola song that went something like this - i'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony i'd like to hold it in my arms and keep it company i'd like to see the world for once all standing hand in hand and hear them echo through the hills "ah, peace throughout the land..." ** on soapbox ** man, i was a total sucker for this song when i was a kid. i envisioned our world as kind, harmonious and peaceful. as i got older, i realized that the world is much more complicated, corrupt and destructive. yes, i've become a cynic and yet, somewhere deep down in my heart, i still yearn for that perfect harmony. so call me a dreamer if you will. call me a romantic if you must... ** off soapbox ** anyway, until the perfect harmony becomes a reality, i will go to el rio where come-all-cuz-we-love-you-and-don't-judge-you spirit has been going strong for over the last twenty years. so if you're a dreamer like me, i highly recommend el rio, especially when the weather is balmy. oh yes, life in san francisco doesn't get much better than sitting out on the el rio's legendary patio with friends and drinking beer on a sunny afternoon. one other thing. um, i don't salsa. hell no!
