by Jenn S. on My experience here was not a great one, as we didn't actually stay. However, my brother & sister-in-law (who I was visiting) said this place is great. We had made a reservation elsewhere on a Saturday night, but for various reasons, were unable to make it. So we drove around for a while trying to find a suitable replacement that would work for a 22-month-old. Very excited about Taverna Plaka - a fun Greek place with belly dancing and amazing food according to my brother - we drove to the restaurant and after being told it was "no problem" to sit us, we valet parked (I love that the majority of Atlanta restaurants have COMPLIMENTARY valet - so nice!). Well, the host brought us into the WAY back of the restaurant, past many empty tables and deposited us by ourselves, in front of a giant-screen TV. We were not having this. The fun of this restaurant is apparently the front room, where all the action happens. We asked about being up front, or even further away from the TV and closer to some of the other patrons and they said no. So we ended up leaving. I'm sure this place is fun & great, but we were bothered by the where they placed us despite tons of empty tables.
by Rodger Potthast on The last time I was at El Rio I met a really drunk friend of a friend who did that "I'm going to the bar, anyone need anything?" thing, to which I replied "Sure, grab me a Stella." Twenty minutes later he comes back with no Stella. This was not surprising--as I mentioned, he was really drunk--but when he saw me he was like "Oh your Stella! I totally got it!" He looked at his empty hand like it should be there, and then the light-bulb popped over his head: "I left it at the bar!" (like I said, *really* drunk). We went back to the bar and the bartender totally just gave him another Stella when he explained what had happened. I was like, "wow, cool." Then we danced to some salsa music and later I wrote this haiku: Beer below treetops Summertime is ripe for fun Drunk voices clatter
