by Monica O. on 'TRUST YOUR PARTNER!!'** I have nearly tried to drive home the wrong Jeep Cherokee every Thursday for the past three weeks. No, I'm not experiencing hormonal imbalance. So, I've noticed the latin dance crowd in Austin largely tends to frequent the same venues. Since Dallas reopened, I've been seeing all those dancers on their Thursday latin nights. Not that that's a bad thing; it's an observation. By that rationale, the same cars are being parked outside every Thursday night, and I am invariably walking up to the wrong car before I see the snazzy steering wheel cover or racing stripes that my Jeep just doesn't have. I digress. Since I came to Austin in 2005, Copa, Ruta Maya, Speakeasy, Oasis dominated as far as bar/dance venues were concerned. Dallas had closed shop by that point, so Copa it was. Which was fine as I was just getting the hang of this salsa thing. I've since wised up about kick-ass air conditioning systems, paying for parking, and water remaining free when you're sweating exceeds the amount of dollars you're willing to spend on bottled water. I'm talking to you Copa. Dallas' ventilation system seems to reign supreme among others' feeble attempts. Their parking is plentiful and free. Their cover is $2-3 (or free if you arrive for their free lessons) and their dance floor is LEVEL, seamless, and expansive, as most two-stepping floors are. Condensed: Dallas really bends over backwards for the dancers. Now, if I have a choice (or the chance to convince my dancing compadres to change their minds) I will choose Dallas over Copa (et al competitors) anyday. Well ok, I will choose Dallas over Copa on a Thursday night. ** Currently working on the percentage of body weight I hand over to partners for dipping me. It's not me, it's you [shrug]
by Ellen W. on This restaurant is beautiful. It's hard to tell what it looks like from the outside but once you walk in, it's like this huge open space. It wasn't crowded at all the day we went. Our server greeted us right away. I have to say this restaurant itself is amazing and I would definitely go back but to the bar area. Dinner was just "meh." Nothing was special about the dishes we ordered. They were all bland and the side of fried rice is so not worth the money. We also had sushi and the rice was kind of hard. The drinks were pretty good though. Food was overpriced and we didn't feel very satisfied at the end of our meal. Go for the decor and drinks. Get better food somewhere else.
by Sharell Koth on I LOVE PLAYERS. Awesome greasy burgers. Wonderful lemonade (homemade!!). Awesome milkshakes. Every few months I go grab a burger and fries for lunch and by the time I'm back at my office, burgers in tow, the grease has seeped through the bag.. Now... that should sound gross as I am actually a pretty healthy eater... but thats what makes this wonderfully mouth watering burger such a treat- the fact that you know it is so bad for you but so wonderfully tasting at the same time. Get a classic burger with everything on it and a large lemonade. BEST lunch ever. Really, I would want to give Player's 6 stars... but the parking lot sucks so I subtracted the invisible 6th star.
