The Bad - Expensive - Overrated - Made reservations and ended up sitting near the kitchen and bathroom The Good - Lobster And Shrimp Spring Roll - Decor was cool. The Bottomline- Like Buddhakan, this place tastes like normal chinese food. it's just more expensive. Nice decor with the goldfishes. Food was okay, nothing special. You can check it out if you don't eat chinese food much. Buddhakan is so much better than Tao though.

Four friends and i went to XIV last night and took part in the DINE LA/restaurant week menu. we had an early rez - so the valet lot was empty, which was nice. i have to say - the valet guys are some of the nicest in town. many of my friends were confused on how to enter the bldg - i on the other hand just pulled on the big thing that looked like a door and had handles....voila, it opened! we sat at the bar for a while and enjoyed some lovely cocktails. i wasn't surprised that the wine averaged out to $12/glass....but for that - the super cute bartender should have served us right when we sat down....sadly, he was a little slow. but,the ABC Chardonnay was terrific. once all of our diners had arrived, we were seated. very comfy table - good location. our waitress was spectacular! the DINE LA menu was nicely balanced and offered a $23, 3-course wine-pairing. if it wasn't raining and i wasn't driving, i would have taken them up on that offer. i started with the caesar salad...very nicely presented. the dressing was a little heavy. i ate 2/3 of it. for my main course, i had the salmon - it was delicious and a beautiful presentation! one of my friends is Alaskan and very picky about salmon (she ordered the chicken - also delish! esp, the truffled mac n' cheese), however, she approved of the salmon and i was very happy to eat the entire portion. for dessert i had the rootbeer float with homemade choc chip cookies. very comforting, rich and a nice way to top off the meal. between the 5 of us, we tasted everything on the DINE LA menu, except the mushroom risotto, and all the food was fantastic (except the passion fruit foam on the nutella dessert - nutella is near perfection and should be left alone). the only bummer was when one of the managers (josh? jake? james?) came over at the end of the meal (while we were still enjoying wine & conversation) and said something to the effect of "i hope you ladies had a lovely dinner, i hate to hurry you along, but we have a lot of people waiting for tables". i was flabberghasted! i waited til he walked away to say how F'n rude he was, but i think he read my lips from across the dining room. i have never had that happen to me, especially in this town! when we finally got up to leave - he realized how rude he was and pleasantly apologized and offered to take care of all our valet parking costs. all in all, an enjoyable evening! thanks, michael mina.

Beautiful space. The restored painting as the backdrop is breathtaking. This place really makes you feel like an adult, with its dim lighting, wood-paneled walls and velvety seats. The little bar snacks (roasted nuts, wasabi peanuts) were zingy and fresh. But, the prices were simply too high. I mean, my guest's Campari and soda was $20 w/o tax and tip. My bottle of Amstel light was $12. I guess if money were no object, 5.
