by Mara S. on Top-noch decor. Tasty drinks. Good place to go if you want to get dressed up and pretend you arrived in a Model-T. But: overpriced (happy hour prices are okay though). And they don't have very many healthy/vegetarian options. They do have a happy hour menu which I recommend: but the food was a little meh. I tried the grilled cheese and tomato soup, which came in generous servings but wasn't especially flavorful; and shared the Edison platter which supposedly included a "selection of cheese"... guess so, if "selection" means three pieces of the same kind of cheese--after all, someone had to select it onto that platter. Also, double standards on the dress code. I suppose it's to be expected on slower nights (which it was), but there were definitely some people with jeans and tennis shoes, which supposedly is like hells-no-you'll-never-get-in. And last: named after a jerk. Yeah, the building's history, etc, etc. Still. I would very much like to open a competing bar across the street and name it The Tesla. Still. A beautiful place.
by Fredricka Chauvaux on I think I get Stephen Starr now. When I moved here I was under the impression his restaurants were the best in Philly. But now I realize they're maybe the best looking, but the food is definitely not top priority. I came here as a guest for a work party. The food was served family-style, so I got to try a lot of dishes. The best thing was the Meze Tasting dish. If I ever get dragged here again, that's my safety net. It is like a Mediterranean antipasto- meats, cheeses, hummus, pita, grilled peppers. I also liked the arugula salad. The rest of the menu was forgettable. Overall it was just okay. The servers were a bit frantic. The interior is beautiful, of course. Good for a drink and a snack, but that's about it.
by Vy A. on This place isn't for everyone. Let me just get that out of the way. If you're coming to the ATL and want to get all decked out and go to the club with that chic new dress and see all the pretty people, stop reading right here and go check out another club. That being said, I'm NOT saying there aren't pretty people at MJQ, because there ARE, but MJQ is all about the music and dance. I really don't come here often, but I have a great time when I do. The first time I went I questioned going into the shack, "Was this some kind of cult? Maybe this was some kind of vampire layer, where I was being lured in only to become supper!!!" I went in to find the club was underground. It's a bit "dungeony", but it has a distinct character. It is very pure in the sense that you can just go there for the soul of the music without worrying about your hair etc. etc. You'll also find some of the best dancers here too. This non pretentious environment and great music makes for a very fun evening. It's probably why this place has been around so long while many of the other clubs have come and gone.
