by Jordan F. on The chips are great and they have a selection of salsas to chose from. The other rateclubsers are right- the al pastor is wonderful. I also really liked the tortilla on the burrito and the rice. I'd recommend getting a burrito over a taco. I'll be back to try the rest of the items on the menu.
by Dara F. on For the most part I like MJQ. The fact that it's so hard to find and literally underground makes the crowd diverse and purposeful. They play really good music on Fridays (mostly underground hip hop before midnight-ish (thing mos def, tribe) and crunk and popular hip hop later on. Drinks are cheap. The extra little room usually has soul/house music playing and people usually break dance and stuff which is cool. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall type atmosphere - gritty, dark, and tight - but if you like that sorta thing that's cool. What I dont like is the cover. The first time I went there like 2 years ago it was $5. A year later they raised it to $10. RIDICULOUS. I'm going to drink, guys, why are you charging a huge cover like there's live music going on in there? I've vowed never to go back for that simple reason. Plus, last time I went it was SUPER crowded and I caught a bug and was sick for days after using the bathroom (yes, im blaming their bathroom. its gross, which i can usually handle, but damn) If MJQ seems appealing, I'd check out Lenny's Bar certain nights or el bar first...cheaper and a lot of the same feeling!

This was the most pointlessly aggressive group of bouncers I've seen anywhere in my 12 years in San Francisco, and they transformed a happy vibe into a fascist police-state vibe wherein the customers felt like suspected felons. There were scowling goons everywhere; they were even in the middle of the *dancefloor* frowning at the crowd. Lots of dirty looks and aggression towards a VERY low-maintenance crowd. These were chilled-out, geeky folks who were there to see Simian Mobile Disco last night. Far more of them seemed stoned than drunk. This was one night after the Obama victory and the bartenders and customers were laid back and cheerful, so I can't understand what the bouncers were so aggravated about. Maybe the boss treats them badly? I give 2 stars instead of 1 because I've only been here once, and maybe the grouchy goon thing was a one-time problem. Aside from the goon infestation, the space is mildly cheesy but not bad all that bad. Just don't let the tag "lounge" throw you. There are couches, but they're all in the same big main DJ room where the bar and dancefloor are. That's fine for dancing, just don't come to Vessel expecting to sit and have a conversation. One message is made loud and clear at Vessel: Security employees come first here; the customers who paid $25 to get in the door are second-class citizens who are lucky to be there, and they'd better go out of their way to make the bouncers feel better. So, with all due respect, Vessel's proprietors and its meatheads can shove it.
