Balance - Saturday Nights This place has mad potential but it has become stagnant.  The lighting lacks inspiration and the decor is stale.  Lighting as with sound can make or break the vibe or feeling of a club.  It's too bright inside.  Dim the lights and the place will have a sexier and more intimate FEEL.  The minute you stop evolving you start dieing.  This club is dieing. I wish DEEP @ Vanguard was on Saturday and Balance was on Sunday. I probably won't go back to this club unless a really good DJ swings by.  The bouncers are chill responsible classy gentleman unlike the twats at Vanguard. It seems like the music is progressively better later in the night when most people leave so if you're a true house head, it's the place to be on a Saturday I suppose...

I came here for a work event tonight - first time here, actually.  I know, it's Jillian's...but the staff was really sweet.  They know it's Jillians, I know it's Jillians, but the staff was attentive and considerate, even though they weren't making tips because people were there to milk the free drinks.  The food is blech-y bar food.  If you like sports, and you like the sport they're featuring on any given night, the HUGE screens are great.  It's like Chucky Cheese for grown-ups who like sports (and pool).  I can't believe that I'm giving it such high marks, but I don't have a reason not to.  The service was great, and that plays a big part.

The first time I was in Atlanta was with my high school marching band in 1998.  (Yeah, I played the bells, wanna make somethin' of it?)  We played during halftime at the Peach Bowl, and went to lots of random Atlanta tourist attractions, including the illustrious Varsity.  I don't remember what the food tasted like at the time, but I do remember the funny hats. I still like the funny hats, and am now more familiar with the rest of the atmosphere, including the barking order-takers, the wall of fame, and the sticky tables.  Sounds mundane, but it really has a charm all its own, especially when you know a little about its history. The Varsity is still the World's Largest Drive-In Restaurant, and has been since 1928, as its website proudly boasts.  The site also features an interactive timeline, where you can "drag the hot dog" across the screen to view the many milestones in their history, including visits by Clark Gable, President Carter and President Bush (Senior, not Junior - insert tasteless but likely true George W. comment here).  Apparently, they also cater now, and you can buy a variety of kitschy collectibles and gift certificates on-site and through their website. On my last visit, I had the most gut-clogging-but-greasily-delicious HUGE onion rings, as well as a pepperjack cheeseburger (way smaller that I thought it would be, but the onion rings filled in the void for sure) and a Frosted Orange.  If you've never had a Frosted Orange, it's like a Creamsicle in a cup, and I highly recommend it.  Yum. Overall, between flashbacks of the sax and trumpet players making fun of the percussion section (and us, in turn, making fun of the flag line girls, affectionately dubbed the "Flaggots"), I enjoyed my meal and am sure I'll go again, if only for a little abuse at the counter and some old-school greasy eats at a celebrated Atlanta landmark.
