by Arielle Gingrich on Decent lounge/club for SF. Tucked away in the alley of Minna, you'd never really expect a club here. Downstairs can get wayyy crowded, and upstairs is for VIP/bottle service. My days of grinding on the dance floor and being sweated on my strangers are over so I mostly hung out in the main room under the trees and watched sweaty 20-somethings try to get their groove on. Immediately to the left of the entrance is a smoking room that gets disguistingly full of smoke. Some douche bag was in there with a cigar stinking it up and a fake Rolex and a silver-plated CZ bracelet pretending to be P.Diddy. WTF?! Would maybe come back, but certainly nothing to rave about.
by Thomasine Jadoo on Bouncers are jerks, everyone knows it and everyone tries their darnedest to interact with them as little as possible. Most conversations run something like this: Bouncer: (Monotone and expressionless) "ID?" You: Hand him your ID. Short and not-so-sweet. If for some reason you have to speak to him further, it's most likely bad news. Usually he'll want your money or even worse, to kick your drunk-ass out. This is just not the case at Mayes. Example: After a super fun night of dancing and mayhem I was hit with a serious case of the drunk-munchies. A nearby pizza place was right there with the cure (more on that later). It was there that a friend realized she must have left her ID at Mayes. Back at the bar we tried to go inside to retrieve it. The bouncer stopped me and politely explained that I couldn't bring in the pizza. That's reasonable, I thought. Then, while my friends were performing a search and rescue, the bouncer offered me his stool so I could sit and enjoy my pizza. Shocked and overjoyed, I immediately took my seat and continued chowing down while having a pleasantly light conversation with a nice man that happens to guard the doors of Mayes for a living. He's really too sweet to be labeled a bouncer. In truth, dancing and drinking with good friends can obscure otherwise important details like the quality of drinks and variety of young men and women, which is why I gave Mayes only 4 stars. When I am blown away by my first sip of an otherwise ordinary cocktail or impressed by the diversity that Mayes attracts, despite any distractions that drunkenness can provoke, I will accordingly add another star.
by Jill D. on I came here for Brazilian Night on Sunday with my token Brazilian. Theo wanted to expose me to the music and the style of dancing but still make it a chill and early night. Mission accomplished at the Mission Rock. Besides being in BFE, this place is pretty cool since it's on the waterfront. However, the sound system isn't all that although the particular bands we saw made up for it and I give them an "A" for effort. It was a really relaxed feeling party with a positive vibe. I will say that I was probably the ONLY non-Brazilian there though LOL. Which is okay because my Brazilian wax totes makes up for it!
