Ajna Bar is an interesting place. I never went when it was originally Buddha Bar because there were so many bad reviews. First of all, it was hard to find this place because it was hidden away and the sign is hard to read. The place is very spacious. It could be a very trendy lounge, possibly even a club, so it seems weird that it is a restaurant. What 1st caught me off guard is the music. I wasn't a fan of the music, it was just weird. The restaurant itself was also very dim; there wasn't much lighting. Besides that, everything was decorated nicely. My friend and I went for restaurant week. They gave us complimentary  edamame to munch on as we looked through the menu. My friend ordered the Cucumber covered shrimp roll as an app. To be honest, it reminded me of a shrimp summer roll. However, instead of the rice paper, they wrapped it in a cucumber wrap, so it added more texture. The taste was just mediocre since I couldn't tell a real difference between that and a typical summer roll. For her main entree, she got the miso-glazed salmon. OMG, this was probably the best dish of the night. The salmon tasted really fresh and it was cooked rare. What i hate about most restaurants is that they cook the salmon all the way, thus making it very tough and dry. This salmon was so moist and tender because it was only cooked rare... i loved it. What made the dish though was the miso-glaze. It was the best tasting miso-glaze ever. I think you could have put that glaze on anything and it would have tasted great. For dessert, she got some passion fruit thingy..i forget what it was called. The passion fruit was flavorful and the custard thing that it covered was very creamy. For my app, i ordered the Chicken Boullion aka chicken wontons in a pho soup. At least thats what it reminded me of. The broth had a lemongrass taste to it and it had cilantro, so it definitely reminded me of Pho. The chicken wontons were average; I think i could have gotten more/better wontons in chinatown for a cheaper price. For my entree, i ordered the herb roasted chicken. This was good too, but not as good as the salmon. The chicken was cooked perfectly. It was very juicy for white meat, and the skin was nice and crispy. It came with saffron basmati rice, but It seemed a bit too wet for me and I didn't really taste the saffron. For dessert, i had the chocolate molten cake. It was THE BOMB. The cake was not dry at all, and i devoured it with the quickness. Overall, the apps weren't great. The entrees and desserts were really good. I think Hung (Top Chef Season 3 winner) did a great job planning out this menu. He just needs to figure out better apps.

The bouncers were rude. The ticket takers were rude.  The bartenders somehow made it worse.  I saw an amazing show by the Australian band Sneaky Sound System.  And I still will never return. In fact, let me call out one bartender, an Asian female - goodlooking, but she dyes her hair brown anyway.  I have never encountered such a bad bartender.  Not only was she unfriendly - she refused to serve me for the rest of the night after I changed a drink order - but she was incompetent.  She would only make drinks in batches of their order, so if two parties ordered 2 vodka cranberries each, she would make two, put everything away, collect the money, and repeat, instead of doing it in one go.  FIRE HER, SHE IS TERRIBLE!!!  A female friend referred to her with a word spelled similarly to aunt, but it starts with 'c.'  I did not argue. NEVER AGAIN!

Was here for the SFIFF event, Evolution: The Musical! Maybe it was more comedy duo illbilly than the venue but it was a great crowd, awesome live band (the very strange very lovable Egglant Casino), a curious film (if you get a chance check out some of illbilly's earlier short films or even better, a copy of the Evolution DVD), great post-premiere dance party DJ and just... all around a really fantastic event, and one of the best, most random fun nights I've had in a while. Such good times, and I have to believe it was in part due to the intimate nature of Mezzanine's floor planning and setup. It just fit the bill as the perfect venue for this event. I'll be back for more.
