by Nori M. on I like the food and the drinks here very much, but the staff can definitely make use of a friendliness course (smile from time to time maybe). They could also make their portions a bit bigger for their prices.
by Junko Kleck on You take a high ceiling warehouse on Hollywood Blvd, turn the old offices into a VIP area that overlooks the main dance floor, and turn the parking lot into a largest smoking patio in Los Angeles and you have the makings of the best club in LA. The only problem, it still looks like a warehouse. That was the biggest complaint about Vanguard. It looked too much like a warehouse. It was consequently relegated to the underground club scene. Vanguard use to host raves and parties for patrons too high on drugs to care about décor. Then, Vanguard splashed on some paint, hung a few curtains, and tried to become a mainstream club venue. Unfortunately, the renovations still left the club looking like a warehouse. Interestingly enough, one demographic saw potential in the warehouse convert. Vanguard quickly became the hottest Friday night spot for the Asian Club scene. After the Asian promoters left, Vanguard went through another set of renovations to try and bring it to the upscale venue it so direly wants to be. The main room got a huge video screen and a huge chandelier. Although you can still see the roots of the club was once a warehouse, the new additions go a long way to making Vanguard look and feel more like a club. Vanguard has given their VIP an industrial flare by tearing up the floor to expose bare concrete, painting it all black, and adding dark curtains. In addition to making the upstairs VIP more industrial looking, Vanguard has added a private smoking patio for their more "important" clientele. The best part? If you book a table outside, it comes with free Hookah!
