I've been to element before. Snuck in and ducked the cover, listened to music that didn't move me, got to the vip and didn't really enjoy it. Came there tonight and delt with horrible bouncers with serious egos. Didn't get in this time. I was severely upset about this considering my pals were in having a blast apparently. I will never go back to this spot unless I'm spinning. Who ever wanted a midtown feel in the LES? You get what you pay for I suppose and in this case, often it is quite a lot.

It pains me to give du Nord only three stars, but it's because, well...okay. Do not get me wrong, du Nord. I love you so much for your crazy history (Prohibition era style tunnels, the creepy passage way between you and upstairs's Swedish Hall), for your impressive array of beer options, and the decor. I've done photo shoots in you that can't be replicated due to the fact the interior is just way boss. The kitchen has turned out some amazing dinner plates for my hungry belly (hummus and pita, hamburgers, thick diner-style fries). Door staff is usually so friendly, you are optimally located by street cars, buses and the underground, and while the sound is hit or miss, it generally does sound great. So why the three stars? Because I can never fucking SEE anything. That's the whole point in going to shows, right? The stage is just not high enough to see anything if you're not in the first half of the audience, and though I am of average height (5'5" and a half), I seriously have to contemplate going to sold-out shows here because I know if I don't arrive by the first band, I will be SOL and be stuck craning my neck. Sometimes I am up to it, but other times I end up ducking out in the lobby area and watching from the pool table if I can, because it's elevated. Also, there used to be doors that were used to block off the dance floor/stage area from the bar and lobby, but now red velvet curtains are in place instead when renovations happened a few years back - not bad, but I think it was more helpful. Also, part deux: minimum at the bar is $25. YIKES.
