by Jean C. on It is quite enjoyable to try to eat and drink your way through a city. I must say that I have just begun to scratch the surface of this town. In a valiant effort to start at Penn's Landing and eat my way through to University City, I went to Morimoto. The decor reminds me of the sleek, mod vibe of Pod with the shape of the seating as well as the shapes on the walls. I started with the rock shrimp tempura and my friend had the edamame. Both appetizers were quite large. The shrimp tempura had a slightly sweet glaze on it, which contrasted quite nicely with the good saltiness of the edamame. Next came the entrees, I chose Duck, duck, duck and she chose the "surf & turf". My duck meal consisted of a madras roasted duck breast (yum!) and a confit risotto with a duck egg on top (double yum)! The breast was cooked perfectly, and the risotto was great with a hint of sweet and savory. The surf consisted of Hamachi on avocado and lightly tossed with something that I don't remember, but I do remember the taste. Her turf consisted of Kobe beef, sliced very thinly. I would estimate that it weighed about 2oz., but it was like eating butter! I can see the draw in eating Kobe beef. I saved room for a dessert (of course) and had the pot de creme. It was covered with a lovely whipped cream and the chocolate was the right density that I love. The only thing I did not enjoy was the carmelized banana that was served on the side. The texture was a little off for me. The wait staff was attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. It was a great experience and I will go back to have the sushi there. Maybe on that visit, I'll see Morimoto! ETA: *see* Morimoto (last sentence)
by Jocelyn Beasley on After having a whole burger (the original one, whatever it's called) and half a banana shake, I seriously contemplated ordering another burger and shake because this place is THAT GOOD. For the New Yorkers out there, I would rank this BETTER than Shake Shack (I only had to wait 40 minutes here and there's a TON of options on the menu, I usually wait close to 2 hours for Shake Shack for very limited options) and probably on par with Burger Joint. I just love Burger Joint too much. As usual, the burger is smaller than something you'd get at, say, Vortex. But IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD. Yes, fries are separately priced, but they are really good too. Our waiter was great, the shakes were amazing, and the atmosphere was very trendy I almost felt like I was in NY all over again. The only minus (and note that I didn't even deduct a star for this) is the parking situation. We were lucky to get a parking spot but if we had to cross that 4 lane highway due to limited parking I think I might have died...literally. So yes, just get a good parking spot and you'll be good to go.
by Bree Baroni on Johnny Brenda's puts the fish in Fishtown. On a cool summer night, we celebrated the coming of fall by starting with an autumn beer. After reading the shared outdoor menu, I went with the Fishtown Stew. With a higher than average price tag for this local hangout, my expectations were high. Worth every dollar-Steamed clams, mussels, scallops and shrimp over a bed of linguini topped with a fresh tomato sauce. We nearly licked the plate. When out to you next visit, go for the gusto and order an exceptional beer and a unique item on the menu- you won't regret it and lifes too short to not enjoy it!
