Wow this place brings back memories! I used to go here often during my college days for drinks and good music. They have a history of great DJ's. I went again this past summer for a friend's birthday celebration and reminisced with all the 90's hip hop and reggae songs that were on rotation. It's extremely small so it gets packed quickly. It can be a mission to get through all the grinding people just to get to the bar!

I am a really big fan of this place. I like Thompson hotels in general, but there's something about the Roosevelt that actually achieves the impossible: it makes me like L.A. I'm down in L.A. quite often on business. This past trip, I decided to stay at the Roosevelt, since Hollywood was a good mid-point for my far-flung meetings. First the basics: the staff is curteous and friendly; my wake up call was performed timely each morning by a real person; the valet service is lickety-split getting your car; my room service breakfasts were delivered within the first 5 minutes of the 15 minute window selected; the rooms were clean and well appointed. My only real complaint is the lack of shelf space in the bathroom, but even that was easily overcome by moving a few things around. What I think is best is that the hotel serves as an absolute oasis from the craziness taking place out on Hollywood Blvd. When inside, you never have cause to realize there are all manner of celebrity impersonators, Crocs-wearing tourists groups led by tiny people wielding light-up, rainbow battons, and washed up druggies directly outside the hotel's original entrance. (They've cleaverly moved the reception area to the back near the parking area.) Futhermore, it's just delightful to walk around. The original lobby is beautiful, and rushes you right back to the glamor of 1920s Tinseltown. In fact, one of the rooms just off the original lobby hosted the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929. The pool area out back is lovely (though I've never been on a weekend, and believe it would probably be pretty "sceney"). The food served at the pool bar and in the Library bar (which I believe is from the hamburger joint attached) is delicious. Big shout-out to the bartender at the Library Bar, who made me a strawberry-horseradish-vodka concoction that was literally the best drink I've ever tasted. I want to make it into sorbet. He was also nice to speak with and theorize over what the room's original use was (we're guessing it was the original reception desk). Plus on random weeknights the crowd in the Library Bar is thin and pretty varied. It ranges from business travelers to tourists to Dennis Rodman on the night I was there. Oh, oh, oh! AND, I have to comment on the pleasant decor in the guest rooms. When I walked into my Delux King room, the first thing I saw over the bed was a giant black-and-white of Mic Jagger and Mitch Mitchell with their arms around each other, the drinks and cigarettes of each threatening alternately to spill on/burn the other. All I could think was: Thank God; I'm home!

My favorite burger in Arizona for two years running. I must frequent Delux at least once every other week or so. The fancy burger bar concept, trendy digs, Camelback corridor locale and outdoor patio with misters means it's usually crowded and usually loud -beware. The service is always quick and dependable - and the food is top notch. They have two types of burgers - but the Delux burger with angus beef, gruyere, bacon arugula and caramelized onions on baguette is soooo good. Likewise on the caprese salad and the sweet potato fries. Order extra of the aioli dipping sauce for your fries. OMG. I. LOVE. THIS. STUFF. The chicken panini is just OK, but the mahi mahi sandwich and veggie panini are great. Don't forget to wash it down with one of the many beers on tap - they must have about 40 or so including the beloved Anchor Steam. Dinner for two will be about $40, but like everything else - you get what you pay for. An Islands burger this aint! A few copycat concepts have popped up in Phoenix, but make no mistake - Delux is the best.
