Don't let the flashy lights fool you. I'd heard about Geno's because of The Food Network so the weekend I moved to the Philly area from Southern California, I took my mom and my aunt here. First off, what's with the ethnocentric and xenophobic remarks about America and such Geno's has plastered everywhere? I felt awkward standing in line looking at all of that stuff, and I'm not a minority. As for the service, meh. It's like any other cheesesteak place, rude yet quick and efficient. The cheesesteak's were unremarkable. Tony Luke's has far better cheesesteak's for about the same price.

Being the "hot" restaurant everyone is raving about, we made 5:30 pm reservations on a snowy Thursday. After our arrival, sitting down and just placing my drink order, I read on my iphone rateclubs app that there was a Happy Hour special. After asking the waiter about it, he "regretfully" said, "No, only at the bar." I looked around and thought, wow being one of only TWO couples in the restaurant you couldn't give the "Happy Hour Special." I just felt a little gypped. What to order? When I see a "Tasting Menu" for only $36 I thought AMAZING deal! And it was amazing and a LOT of food! The short of it: Salamtim & Hummus (pick the butter and grilled garlic!). Halavi: Crispy Haloumi (rock ur cheese world!) & Fried Cauliflower. Basari: Chicken Freekah (vegetarian? you're allowed to pick two Halavi's!!) Al Ha'esh: The Jaffa with fennel and olives - simply amazing. Dessert - well don't get the warm chocolate cake - not out of this world. If going as a couple, suggestion: one purchase the tasting menu and order two additional items off the menu to make a meal - there is a LOT of food!

Damn but their food is tasty. I've actually had dreams about the Spicy green beans- yes, they are spicy enough to warrant an upper-case "s". The tuna burger is also close to divine, but be sure to order fries or you'll feel left out since it comes with a salad. The burgers are quite tasty and you might not feel like you have any room left for beer, but you better save some- they've got pretty nice ones on tap. Last time for me, it was Stoudt's Scarlet Lady. Yum. The tin ceilings are great, but too bad the place is tiny and there's only room for a few tables. It is indeed a "lovingly restored" pub and I wish there were more places like this!
