OK .. This is really about jazz-blues singer Kim Nalley.. But the Rrazz Room gets the my rateclub stars for frequently booking her.. I remember first seeing Kim Nalley many years ago in her big-voiced-hot-looking-sigh-inducing-babe-female-l ead-vocalist incarnation performing in the tiniest and tightest of dresses with the Johnny Nocturne band. I carried a sort of male-fan type crush on her ever since.. But never was able to quite catch her again until last night when my brother and myself caught her in the Rrazz room performing her latest offering "Let the Good Times Roll." The intervening years have added *heft* to her frame (no longer the shapely young thing), her reputation, and her presence. She *is* the show now.. *She* sets the mood, calls the songs (varies from night to night) banters with the audience.. Raises the mood in the room.. and .. at least the night we were there.. packs the house.. She still has her big voice.. often dispensing with the mic and filling the room with her un-amplified singing.. and best of all.. from my point of view... she doesn't let her shows become passive affairs.. She gets off on bringing in the audience to sing along or sing the refrains.. ("Oh When the Saints.." "Oh when the Saints.." "go Marching in" .. "go marching in.." that kind of stuff)... Makes us part of the show.. Ever since I took up karaoke.. I don't go to many of these concert and jazz club shows... Because they are so expensive and .. well, as good as the performer might be... I'd really *rather* be listening to *myself* Well, with their $35/person admission and two-drink minimum, shows at the Rrazz club are expensive.. no getting around that.. But with Ms. Nalley running the show.. you can rest assured that you will be entertained, wowed.. AND included..

It's hard to imagine NOT finding wine bars better than Blush. The service here is slow and the wine selection is kind of not great. You can drink better wine at better prices at UVA in the lower haight. Back when this place was Bon Port, they used to have lunch specials that would include a crepe and a glass of cider or sparkling wine for a decent price, but I haven't seen that on Blush's menu. The only positive thing I can say about Blush is that they have pretty sizable pours. But you could buy a bottle of equal quality stuff for that price. Blush is a nice reminder that the best way to drink wine is with friends at home.
