I used to go to "The Kong" once in a while last year, until I realized Yenching was MUCH better and right nearby. The Kong is very cheap, but the place is quite sketchy and the food is awful. It's open late which is convenient, and you get what you pay for, but I would really recommend that you get food a bit earlier and go to Yenching next door.

Originally built in 1886, this was the premier venue for emerging rock acts. Today it is a mercenary for those who are willing to rent the venue out for Special Events. Case and point: The Joy of Sake Event today from 6:30-9pm. Tickets cost $80. Restaurants such as Sakagura, 15 East, Geisha, Nobu, OMS, Matsuri, Woo Lae Oak, Sushi Samba, Riingo, Kai, wd-50 were partaking in the 3 floors of festivities. There were 327 sakes on hand to sample from, not to mention lots of Daiginjo sakes and sakes not available in the U.S. Small bottles of Pellegrino and still water were omnipresent. (Notable standouts below are denoted by an asterisk) -FOOD- - -15 East (Masato Shimizu, Marco Moreira, Kim Wood) - Anago Tofu with Salmon Roe - sea eel with eggs on top, just OK, nothing memorable *Bond Street (Marc Spitzer, Shige Mikami) - King Salmon Sashimi with Wasabi Zuke - shot of apple cider vinegar in a dropper made this dish SING!, I had 4 of these! -Bozu (Makoto Suzuki) - Tofu Salad with Basil-Soy Dressing - tasted pasty and cheesy, served with some mushrooms, quite odd, not fond of this *Geisha (Kathleen Grosch) - Coconut Blanc Mange, Preserved Ginger dipped in chocolate - aka corn starch pudding, long coconut shavings made this dish delectable, there were also chocolate shavings and tapioca pearls surrounding a white dome of starchy goodness in the middle, not a ginger fan so can't comment on that one -Kai (Satomi Lore, Masatsugu Kawai) - Ham & Spinach Panade - round flaky ball, was quite mushy, didn't enjoy this -Matsuri (Tadashi Ono, Tsubasa Nagayama) - Crab Shumai - was OK, I still prefer the pork/shrimp shumai @ dimsum -Nobu (Ricky Estrellado, Anne Yamamoto) - Grilled Pork Belly Anticucho with Green Mango Amaponsu - generous portion, good, not too fatty, flavorful, didn't care much for the amaponsu *oms/B (Ayano Izumi) - Rice Ball with Grilled Salmon, Mayo and Flying Fish Roe - muy delicioso, tasted like awesome minced salmon over a tiny riceball, even the rice was tasty, I had 2 of these! *Riingo (Jimmy Lappalainen) - Spiced Yellowtail Tataki with Fennel & Pomegranate - this was very good, perfectly seared, didn't care for the garnish much -Sakagura (Akinobu Suzuki, Hisaya, Kadoi) - Smoked Duck - complex in flavor but a big tough for me, still like Kyo Ya's much better *Sushi Samba 7 (Fernando Navas, Midori Roth, Arik Torren) - 2008 Joy of Sake Event. Their featured dish was Yellowtail Taquitos, Chocolate parfait - the taquitos had a nice crispy shell, overpowered the yellowtail though, the chocolate parfait was very good, wafer crisp on bottom, layer of vanilla and nutella on top, I had 3 of these! -wd-50 (Wylie Dufresne, Daleth Cho) - Chestnut-Horseradish Soup with Smoked Mackerel & Verjus - met Wylie, not crazy about this concoction, thick and rich but preferred the horseradish not to interfere w/ the chestnut flavor, not sure if that combo worked, served w/ fingerling potato chips, verjus is a very acidic juice made by pressing unripe grapes, this was served as a red ball on the bottom and melted away after the soup was poured over it, some call it gastronomy *Woo Lae Oak (Harold Kim, Dan Reiser) - Ke Salmari-Dungeness crab & Leek Wrapped in Spinach Crepes - super crabby, pan fried wrap was subtle but super chewy, very tasty, I had 4 of these! -SAKE- *Masumi - all of these were excellent *Chokaisan - Int'l Sake Challenge - 2008 Gold Medal *Manabito - Int'l Sake Challenge - 2008 Silver Medal *Tyku - tastes like midori *Zen - green tea liquer, great with tea, very smooth and dangerous Pics: http://www.meetup.com/...

Great venue. BEAUTIFUL. Seriously gorgeous interior. Annoying as hell prices for drinks though. Unless you have drink tickets or have a date with a bankroll (or one yourself) I would not suggest this place to drink in. If I'm paying more than $8 per shot, I'm in the wrong bar.
