Checked this place out for the first time last night. I just dl'ed the Scout Mob iPhone app, which I HIGHLY recommend because it offers insane deals at Atlanta businesses (average discount is probably 40%), and they were offering 50% off your check at this place (though the max discount is $30). I had been hearing about it for a while and the girlfriend and I had plans down the street later, so it was a perfect time to check this place out for the first time. One is tucked away on the side street of Dutch Valley Rd by Piedmont Park. It has a real small facade that makes it look smaller than it actually is; if it weren't for the clubbish-blue lights around the entrance you might miss it. One offers valet parking, which is nice, though I usually prefer to self-park. Once inside, you'll see that One is a converted warehouse that has been jazzed up with a mix of old and new decor. There is brick, string lighting, candles, tree sculpture art, a "wine wall," and an open kitchen that divides the front and back of the restaurant. The dining room is very open, comprised of booths aligning the walls and long connected tables in the middle. We sat in a booth, which was very nice, with huge comfy velvet cushions. The food was excellent. We started off with their crisp breadsteaks and doughy bread slices, served with edamame hummus. Then we had the Georgia Shrimp appetizer, which was essentially shrimp cocktail garnished with apricots, avocados, and beef. The shrimp was tender and flavorful, but next time we go I think we will try a different appetizer. For dinner I got the hanger steak, which the waiter said was one of the few dishes that has been on the menu for the entire duration of the time One has been open. They cook their meats over a woodfire grill, and you could taste it; the steak was very juicy and tender within, but had a crisp, well done exterior. The woodfire really adds a hickory smoke flavor and the meat itself was high quality - no fat to cut through. It was served on "fingerling potatoes," which in my experience means nice wedge potatoes with a little parmesan or garlic on them. What I got was basically french fries, but they were pretty good - it just made the dish a lot heavier. I had a glass of the Avalon Cab Sav with my steak, and it was a perfect wine choice. My gf had the bass, and she enjoyed it. The service was pretty good. We came at about 10:30 on a Friday night, so it was less than 1/2 full, mostly with people finishing their meals. The server took a while to take our order, even though he stopped by the table about 3 times, but each time he said he was going to keep giving us a minute even when we were ready to order. No biggie, the food came out quickly, and he remembered to bring my wine out with my steak, so he did a good job. Apparently the Scout Mob promotion has taken some tip dollars away from the staff. He said he had been getting a lot of people using the discount, and I could tell he was worried he wouldn't get tipped on the original amount (he even made a point to tell us how much the discount saved us when he handed us the check). Our meal was $90 before we got $30 off, but i used to wait tables so I know better and he got tipped on the $90. All in all, we will be back to One soon. It has some very, very good dishes - everything we had was great and everything on the menu sounded so good that we will probably come back regularly. You can tell it tries very hard to be an "IT" spot with a trendy hip vibe. And sure, it does have a great atmosphere and distinct feel. But from a diner's perspective, my advice to the owners would be to let the food speak for itself. This is not the kind of place that has to get by on trendiness, an upscale or hip feel, and its Piedmont Park address. They know what they are doing in the kitchen and should keep the focus there. One is a good place for a date, a celebratory meal like a birthday or after a big promotion, or anytime you just want a great satisfying meal from start to finish. Highly recommend!

When I went with all my model friends it was a fucking party- hence the one star away from, "I'd rather sit naked on a Mojave cactus". HOWEVER! I am boycotting this place.. and so should anyone with an average looking friend. The door-promoter looked me right in the eye and said, "I'm sorry (my name here), you and Kay are always welcome.. but your friend .. (head nods toward) .. I can't let in". Then some dunny side-kick promoter chimes in, " yeah, what are you? Like, an escort for old balding faggots?" Take a moment. This happened. A bad 8-ball or not.. this is inexcusable. Yes, he is 40 and owns commanding steak in a car manufacturer. OK, his style kinda resembled Entourage's mayer of Beverly Hills.. but no excuse! That was wrong. OPERA HAS BEEN X'ed The X.

I'm surprised Vanguard only has an average of 3 stars!? This is a great place if you really enjoy the house music scene (the good, bad & ugly) and go on either a Saturday or Sunday night. Saturdays are hosted by Giant for a very European big room house sound. Sundays are hosted by Deep for more of a soulful and intimate house sound. Giant will basically book the top touring DJs, regardless of sub-genre, in the world with great opening sets by local DJs. Marques Wyatt from the OM Records label is the resident DJ for Deep. Sundays are the best night. Vanguard could use a Funktion-One or Phazon sound system but that maybe asking for too much. I don't think there's a single LA club that has invested in a sound system that is on par with the mega clubs in NYC, Miami, Ibiza, London or Tokyo.
