by Jude B. on Love this place. Great decor, friendly staff, good food. Everything you could want from a neighborhood bar, and then some. The "then some": * Weekly events, such as Tuesday Karaoke and Wednesday Quizzo keep this place hopping even on weekdays. Other less frequent events like the Old City Sideshow or Belle & Sebastian Dance Party are worth checking out too. Check their website or facebook for up to date events, there's almost always something cool going on. * I know I mentioned the decor, but it bears repeating. The inside of this place is awesome. Steampunky and cozy, warm and woodsy. * This place gets PACKED on Friday and Saturday nights. Great DJs and a pretty fun crowd (obviously it's Old City, gonna have your share of douchebags and douchettes, but still). But if you're a regular, they'll take care of you. On more than one occasion I've been a few heads back from the crowded bar and one of the bartenders has noticed me and made my usual drink before the afore-mentioned douchey people. Respect. * One of the most spacious bars in Old City (and Philly), lots of room to wander around and socialize. I've met some pretty great people here.
by Jeff B. on I will start by saying that I did not come here to see one of the "novelty" acts that play here, but to see my friend's band. Apparently, they host metal shows here on Wed night. I can't speak for the quality of the bands really but I walked in on a pretty awful, not very metal opening act. The bouncer was cool (he gave me a fist bump on the way in), but the guy at the door was kinda dick. He made me pay $5 even though I was on the band's "free" list. (Cover is normally $10) Which leads me to my next point: the joint is a little pricey. I assume this is because of the aforementioned novelty acts, but $7 for a well drink from a dive club is pretty bogus. (did I mention there is a $10 cover?) All gripes aside, it wasn't a terrible venue. The band sounded good, decent size floor, cool atmosphere, and chill smoker's patio out back. I might return again.
by Bart Shatswell on Charismatic Kat's Cafe I began my Friday as usual, things to do, people to see.... I was mostly excited about visiting Kat's Caf, since my schedule seems to never allow it. So I grabbed a friend and we headed over to Kat's Caf, we were attending a friend's birthday celebration and they were offering Afri-Salsa lessons, Yippee!!! You must try Afri-Salsa, it's so much fun, I'll tell you more about that later, back to Kat's Caf...What a warm, sophisticated and inviting spot, I met Kat a few years ago and she's truly an inspiration to me. The caf is very intimate, 2 cozy fireplaces, separate rooms, a great place for a first date! Start your weekend on Thursday, calling all vocalist, musicians, a jam session at Kat's, show's at 9pm. The Caf offers Martinis on Fridays for $5, delicious $3 appetizers, $8.99 Snow Crab Legs, and DJ Larmarrous spinnin' eclectic beats, get there between 5pm-9pm for the drink and food specials. Can you believe it, there's NO COVER! Just so you know, Kat's Caf is between 9th & 10th street, tucked away underneath the Helmet Salon, it's in the same spot formerly occupied by Jake's ice cream. Now get dressed, find a date, meet and greet, singles welcome too...and head on over to Kat's Caf, you'll be glad you did!
