by Ashley S. on A large group of us had just finished eating a late night dinner in Soho when we got the idea to head over to Gold Bar to check out what all the fuss was about. It was well after midnight at the time and we were all pleasantly buzzed from cocktails at dinner. Our group was a decent mix of girls and guys however everyone was dressed mid-level (not slumming it not dressy) just summer jersey dresses and gladiators, not exactly meatpacking and heels. The guys were especially casual and when we strolled up at 12:30-1:00 ish on a saturday night I was surprised to see there was no line at all. The door guys said that they were done/full for the night. We could clearly see as a couple exited the bar that it was packed and in no means done.... my friend chatted up the door guy and they talked about how sweet his tattoos were. He decided that our group wasn't half bad and we were allowed in. The decor was very impressive and it has a semi-circle arched ceiling reminiscent of an old wine cellar, long and subway car like the bar is in the front, the live DJ is in the back. My fresh ingredients only, yum, mojitos were tasty and the bartender took a really long time muddling the fresh lime and the mint, however for $15.00 a pop the low ball tumbler was mostly crushed ice. No bang for your buck here just paid for all that manual muddling! The dance area in the back part is very crowded with low tables and padded benches running the length of each side. The only real place to dance is around the tables or in the runway aisle in the middle where you will be getting bumped constantly by passerby-ers and the bus boys who are a tad overzealous to say the least. While I was dancing the staff tried to clear my half-consumed drink at least 4 times and I kept saying no thats mine I am still working on it, never the less someone else comes by and tries to bus it away another 2 times and I end up having to hold onto it after that! This place did seem to wind down 30 mins after we got there and my attention span greatly waned, I was surprised that on a Saturday night this place was so dead by 2 pm, maybe this was why the door was turning ppl away, they wanted to wrap it up early, doesn't make sense to me at all....
by Lee C. on As a big time hiphop fan I've been looking forward to going to this place ever since I heard about it. Finally got out there last weekend, on a Saturday night. Yes it was packed. First thought when I walked in was "wow, this place is small".. but on a 25 second walk to the bathroom, I almost danced with about 6 different people. This place is a jammed party.. which I love haha.. If you want to go somewhere and dance your ass off to some good music, this is the spot to go. If you want to go somewhere and just hang around on a wall... go elsewhere. I was there for 2 hours and danced for 90% of the time. Every time I wanted to take a break, something like "Trick Daddy - Shut Up" would come on and I couldn't help myself. Awesome place.. this is my first review and I don't want to be too easy so I'm going 4 stars..
