I way over analyzed Maggiano's, so if you do not want to read a bunch of business-oriented commentary just stick with my little phrase: Maggiano's Little italy-Austin... MLIA... Maggiano's Likely Is Average. I live with 4 other guys, and we are always up for free food. Maggiano's "eat one, take one" pasta policy seems like the perfect perk for college kids who love Italian food. Thus, they brought home about 6 dishes after dinner, and I could not wait to feast on the pre-packaged pastas. Lo and behold, when I opened the fridge, I saw a brown bag advertising: "We proudly serve Barilla Pasta." I frantically panicked; could it be? I looked in the bag, and sure enough, my horrifying predictions were correct. There was Maggiano's pasta dishes inside! No! It cannot be! Why would an "upscale" Italian eatery advertise pre-purchased pasta, and cheap pasta at that? Well, I guess you can always judge Italian eatin' by the sauce, so that is what I proceeded to do. The chicken alfredo was rich and creamy without any outstanding flavors, so it was essentially creamy noodles. The sausage baked ziti was mediocre and boring, the sausage being tough and bland. The meat sauce on the spaghetti was passable, but ordinary nonetheless. The eggplant parmigiana was borderline terrible. When I opened the-one-who-eats-like-a-vegetarian's box, I was like, "AWESOME! Lasagna!" Then I realized, it was just stacked pieces of veal parmigiana. Then I started eating my way through the stack, I realized that what I thought was veal was just breading sandwiched between breading. There was no eggplant to be found except a thin layer glued to the breading. And the breading sucked anyway. So I guess you could say that Maggiano's is an average pasta joint. You can order whatever "freshly prepared" Barilla and sauce combinations you want, and get one to go. But... there lies a twist. The pasta is actually also ready-to-heat even in the kitchen. The $1 box of pastas were not even cooked fresh to order! $14 seems great for 2 portions of pasta, but not when it is not fresh. Also, it may be hard to grasp the fact that a $14 bowl of pasta consists of 50 cents of pasta, 50 cents of ground beef, 50 cents of tomato sauce, 25 cents of aromatic vegetables such as onions and garlic, and 10 cents of shredded cheese. Perhaps the nice plastic packaging container costs more than the food. Maggiano's has made a terrible mistake by serving in-house pastas identical to take-home pastas, not to mention the fact that everyone knows how much a box o' Barilla runs. Top the noodles off with less than extraordinary sauces, and you have yourself a perfect recipe for C quality pasta. At least you get to take some home!

This venue is humble, yet truly a Los Angeles gem! It never ceases to amaze me how many incredible acts have gone in and out of here. From foriegn folk and indie rock shows to dirty house DJ sets! The firt time I came here was in October '08 for a Stars show. I immediately loved the venue upon walking in. It is so beautifully decorated and inviting inside. I didn't have it back to the Avalon again until September '09--this time to go clubbing on a Control Friday. The wait was well-worth it. Wolfgang Gartner was amazing! Definitely had a great birthday experience dancing to his set. I've also seen Felix Cartal, Dada Life, Armand Van Helden etc. The bathrooms are decent-- always clean with never toooooo long a line. The only annoyance is falling victim to hearing high-pitched, giddy drunken nonsense between girls whom are already unintelligent while sober. Also (just the other night), being pushed by pacts of rolling girls eager to save $ and refill their water bottles via the bathroom sinks. Then again, what can you expect from an EDM club? Which brings me to the vast plethora of people you will find here at the Avalon- From enthusiastic, asian foreigners who will smoke like chimneys and awkwardly try to converse with you... to older folk in their 30's/40's whom are clearly not ready to let go of their 90's raving days... to arrogant "guido" types who dress badly and can never seem to hold off on the hair gel... to your typical LA hipsters... to straight EDM-lovin' types whom immediately make their way to the front and prefer the performance versus the social aspect of the night club (like myself). There is also plenty of room to roam around here. With an outside patio, balconies, and a second floor, it is easy to "explore" a little if you're getting bored of the dancefloor. I am also a fan of the "Legit Lounge." Music being played here has never ceased to impress me! So far I've witnessed  DJs who play minimal techno, downtempo/ lounge house, dubstep, straight disco sets! There is always something different here and plnety of room for awkward dancing/ people-watching! Just last night saw a Ladytron DJ set (Mira), she was awesome! Note: If you are not a fan of electronic music and don't like dancing to/listening to "techno," you honestly have no purpose to review this club. It is a DANCE music-oriented club, so if you are looking for some poppy top 40 type junk, look elsewhere.

I had heard so much hype on TV and through friends who still live in WeHo about this place. I went there last weekend to revisit all my old spots and try new ones. Honestly, there was nothing there that really impressed me. The downstairs patio is nicely lit and has a great atmosphere with the (what looks like) large over sized couches, but other than that, it was like a regular club. My friend and I got in right away because she knew one of the bouncers and promoters, but our other friends who came later had to wait for over 30 minutes outside. Yes, perhaps it's because they were male, but still, come on, the place was not packed! It's as if they were trying to keep up the pretentious Hollywood feel? Like I said, I could understand if it was jam-packed, or a special event, or celebrities were there, but it was Christmas weekend! And the drinks were way overpriced. 30 dollars for TWO Redbull vodkas! Then there was the weird motion of moving us from one room to another... at some point they would open the doors and kinda shove us into the other room and not let us back in the same room later. I found that odd. We are not cattle. Positives?: Clean, nice atmosphere, decent (typical nightclub Top 40) music, bottle service, very trendy if thats what you're looking for. Negatives: Pretentious, unimaginative, typical Hollywood trendy spot, expensive for no reason. Like in Finger Eleven's song "I hope this club closes in three weeks, that would be cool with me..."
