geeEEEzus... after nearly seven years of living in new york, i finally went to hiro after some out of town friends wanted to meet up with their peeps there. wtf, people. 1. $20 cover. hello, do you think you're vegas? for $20 i better get an extremely attractive, tanned young man fanning me with palm fronds as i walk in the freakin' door. (no, this didn't happen). i mean damn. 2. is it necessary for every freakin' employee of the club to treat every freakin' customer like we're about to either barf, cause a riot, or both? granted, it appeared from the clientele that this was actually quite possible from a decent number of sketchies, but still. being a generally courteous, on this occasion completely sober individual, i was miffed by the aggressive herding, yelling, and general disrespect. 3. the music blew. 4. the club appears to be full of people who are not interested in meeting each other, for those of you who are interested, but rather have come instead with people they have pre-identified as their hookup for the night and this is the venue in which to let down your shy, giggling guard (ladies) or be an impressive, gelled hair macho man (men). 5. the drinks we did order (mercifully i forgot which drinks) were so bad that even my plebeian friend, who will drink anything, tried to foist it off on his friends, such as myself. i'm curious as to what management strategy results in using leftover bathroom cleaner as cocktails. part of the economic downturn cost savings plan? i'd say the girls dangling from the ceiling in the cloth streamers was probably the most intriguing part of the night.

On this past Columbus Day, I had the day off.  Nobody else that I knew did, so I had nothing to do.  So I just rode the MUNI all day.  Near the end of the day, I felt like catching MNF, so I hoped off the bus, looked up the nearest sports bar, and found this place. Not...too...shabby.  A good selection of $5 pints.  Random odd patrons (one of whom left a 5c tip).  A funny bartender.  And big ass TVs.  I don't know if I'll ever be in this neighborhood again, but if I am...I might ponder visiting again ;)

This review is in regards to Sunday salsa only...since that's when I have been there..... Hell'a Fun...plain and simple. Now, a lotta salsa folk here on Rateclub have trashed the Sundays here....and, well, a lotta salsa folk on Rateclub also are a bit too...self-absorbed, shall we say.  So, for those folk with an attitude problem or delusions of salsa-grandeur...there is Jelly's on a Sunday afternoon.... for those folks who are maybe not god's gift to salsa...but enjoy it nevertheless, and are just out to hang in a cool spot, listen to some great music (basically, the bands here are the same salsa bands as everywhere else) outdoors, dance some, strike up conversation, and get buzzed on a Sunday afternoon....well...say no more... tell me...why is it that Gay bars are so much more fun...the clientele so much cooler and more open to just conversing...than straight places ? (rhetorical Q...I have lived her for 20 years now...) observation:  a salsa lead has not experienced being a salsa lead until he has danced with a transgender follower....period.... Pluses: 1) The crowd, completely devoid of the typical affectations; the music, the outdoor courtyard, the vibe.... 2) Free barbeque on Sundays...ribs, chicken (I am a veggie, so this means nothing to me, however)... 3) Salsa lessons before the band...they aren't bad.  Not great, but better than some places. Minuses: 1) The queue at the bar....who the hell lines up single-file... at a bar ?  Where are we...finishing school ? 2) Barkeeps and doorman can be a bit cranky....but then again, they have to stay in the dark, divey interior while we get to play in the tropical.... jardin....(nevertheless, they still can be kinda bitchy sometimes) 3) no mojitos on a Salsa Sunday...! ? ...what the hey ?!?! 4) gets insanely crowded as the afternoon morphs into evening.... but then again....that makes it El Rio on Sunday..... If you like at least 2 of the following: latin music Salsa Dance free Q diverse crowd palm trees lean-to's the second Margarita being 6 times as strong as the first.... check it out......
