Really romantic and laid back atmosphere. Drinks take awhile, but what can you expect from a busy bar with handmake cocktails? Besides, our waitress was a sweetheart and I am in love with the rum daisy! In fact, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.

The Good: + Filet Medallion - medium rare - fantastic + Mushrooms and fries, excellent sides + Tuna tartar with plantains, delicious + Service was prompt, waitress was friendly + Seating upstairs (private parties I think) is gorgeous, downstairs in the back (large parties) is also very nice, seating in the front (small groups) sucks The Bad: + Having to tell the bouncer (yes, this is a restaurant) that you have reservations + Waiting 1/2 hour for a table despite having reservations + Place is swarming with bankers (of the obnoxious variety), my girlfriend was stared at the entire time we were in the place + Seemed like 1/2 the place was there for a business dinner, lots of suits and ties + Extremely Loud! Be Prepared to Scream - this place feels like a club or maybe more accurately a peculiar lounge that loves playing 90's rock and pop + You're likely to get sat next to very loud, drunk men who haven't been out in three months and consequentially have forgotten how to STOP STARING AT MY GIRLFRIEND Takeaway: Food was very good. I'd come back if someone had a private party upstairs. It's the only way to isolate the amazing food from the unfortunate scene downstairs. Three stars.

Some things never change, like crappy Atlanta mayors and the futility of matching wits with a Sicilian when death is on the line, and some things need never change - the Varsity tops the second list. I have known the Varsity all my adult life, and like an old friend it never really changes. I had lunch here today, and with the first bite of my slaw dog was instantly transported to a kinder gentler time 25 years ago, when the greasy V was a major part of my diet as a GT student. The fries are still handcut and greasily good, although I understand transfat free. Sheez, you'd think lard was plutonium or something... The carhop service is still there, and so are the TVs in the dining rooms that so captivated me as a child (no, not transvestites, that's after midnight only). Everyone in rateclubs-land who has not visited the V yet should make a concerted effort to sample the fare at this Atlanta landmark. Note: I have to subtract a star for the fact that this food will still kill you if consumed regularly, transfat or no. But "Moderation" is the Georgia state motto, you know, so enjoy it responsibly...
