So now I've been to Mansion both in New York and Miami... this is definitely nothing to brag about. Both clubs are filled with trashy, too much gel, freakishly tan Jersey-types. I've literally never seen so many girls with ill-fitting clothes trying desperately to get guys to invite them to their tables. At least the NYC version is impressive just because of its sheer size. Mansion in Miami is small and not all that visually appealing. I was also extremely confused by the naughty school girl outfits (think Britney circa "Hit Me Baby One More Time") worn by the hostesses. Not only random and out of place, but also totally 2001. There's got to be better nightlife in this town.

Okay, I was pretty amped to check out this place because it gets all the kudos on rateclub, *and* because someone (who's a hot gal) recommended it to me. So I finally got a chance to go this past weekend and took a buddy there for a weekend tipple. Might've been Friday, I'm not sure. Anyway, the first thing to note was that parking spaces are abundant in the area, which is always a nice touch. As mentioned before, the place isn't much of a sight from the outside; a simple printed banner hangs over the dark facade of the building, and apart from the friendly bouncer dude it's the only indication that there's even a bar in this location. Second impression: Small space. So then why were they charging a five-dollar cover? My personal view is that a hip bar does not need to charge a cover, because it should draw enough patronage to afford its upkeep and then some. Of course, I hold this belief because I am, at my core, a cheap bastard. Anyway, there was a DJ there pumping out some good house beats, which I personally always find encouraging. The crowd looked like a mix of Mission Street hipsters and dressed-down yuppies, with a bunch of birthday girls tossed in for good measure. Overall, pretty friendly. When we got there (around 11pm) the place was still pretty empty. Large booths provided plenty of seating space, but you had to sit on busted up cushions. Our drinks were pretty decent, although I'll admit my alcoholic tastes are pretty simple so it really comes down to the staff's ability to follow basic (but probably somewhat annoyingly picky) directions: Gentleman Jack, just a bit of ice. We stayed for the drink and the crowd grew a bit and shrank a bit, and a small but steady stream of semi-drunk people made use of the photo booth. After the one drink, my friend decided he didn't like the vibe, and there wasn't enough compelling reason for me to object to leaving, so we vamoosed. So why only three stars? Well, other than the photo booth, I thought the place was kinda average. Personally I liked the way the place's "feel" overall, but quite frankly the cover charge was a turn-off. Bonus points for the geektastic street address, but I think I'd rather go to Anu next time: Same vibe, no photo booth, no cover charge. Yeah, I'm a really really cheap bastard.
