by Irwin Wigelsworth on the red lighting was a PLUS but i think i would have liked this place better before the renovations - the menu was more new american than diner and the prices reflect that service was slow and the food was mediocre. had the pan seared striped bass and the hamburger to compare both high and low items. the bass was nicely plated and had a lovely seared crust, but it was cooked just a bit too long and was underseasoned. the burger was generous and good, the fries were generous but many of the pieces were potato ends that, because they are so short, were more like crisps than fries i also had the calamari appetizer, which, like most places i think, overbread and overcook the squid, though it was not too greasy i also had a couple slices of my friend's pizza, which was ok, but the crust was definitely too hard. she did, devour a pound of chicken wings before the pizza came so i assume they were good (i didn't try them as i am not fond of bird wings) i did enjoy the beers on draft to wash it all down;) the club side was completely empty when we were there (sunday around 10) so we didn't bother um, why are all the diner's going bourgie? or perhaps all the diners that get rateclubsed cater to a bourgie crowd. mea culpa.
by Paul A. on i finally got to check out a show here last night. one of the best venues for a live musical performance. located in the tenderloin - so parking is almost impossible, unless you check in the amc van ness garage and pay up. very accomodating for an intimate show - just saw ms. lauryn hill there last night after a 2 hr wait in line outside for the 2nd installment. the balconies and the intricate floral mouldings along the side of the venue gives the venue a nice touch. the sound was good and the ventilation was good overall. i saw someone get their @&& beat prior to the show, it went on for like 5 minutes with people getting in the mix one after the other. with the circle in the middle of the floor forming, along with the funk music playing in the background, i expected a bit of breakdance fighting. that would have been awesome!!!!
