definitely an acquired taste I think most people go there for the experience, music, belly dancing, etc We were there on a Friday and seemed like all tables were birthday parties? Ours was 50 people large, so maybe that's why the service was slow. It took long for the drinks and food. But our waiter did an outstanding job with separating the checks. The place was very smoky when we walked in, there is only a curtain separating you form the kitchen. Music is obnoxiously loud, you can't carry on a conversation. For some reason throwing cocktail napkins in the air is supposed to be fun (sub for confetti?), but what it ends up creating is a mess... napkins in your food and all over the floor. Unusual. As I said: acquired taste. Stuffed Eggplant was good, not sure if $13 worth of good. The fried calamari was as expected - not much you can do wrong with that, thank god. No mojitos :( Margarita so so Dancing around the tables was fun. Dancing on the tables looked dangerous. At 11pm we moved over to the salsa room (on Fridays only?). The class has just finished there, so it felt like we were crashing their party. Looks like all regulars and a tight circle. There was no intermingling. Nice floor.

When you walk up the stairs, past the Shiner bottle chandelier in the entranceway, you come up into a space on the second floor that feels like there should be sawdust on the floor. Phenomenal place if you're in Austin! Great selection of beer, several varietals of Shiner on tap. Great staff, super reasonable prices. We are from Chicago and decided to hit as many joints as possible in town and this is one of the best! We actually ended up going back at the end of the night for some food. I love the fact that you can brisket on just about anything. Not to be missed! Check it out if you're in town!

I would say that we need more places like Star Bar in Atlanta, but then that would be impossible. It can't be duplicated, replicated, imitated, or even explicated.... If you've never been, start with a Tuesday night and get your funk on...or just cruise their schedule on the web and pick a band out that sounds interesting. Hell, pick out one that sounds horrible and you'll still have an entertaining time. Cheap beer, good times, and it makes no apologies for being a smoky dive that showcases unique live acts. Long live Star Bar.
