This is by far the most pretentious club in New York, filled with D-List celebrities and reality TV show wannabes. If you want to see some loser fake celebrity cut the line and pretend their somebody or a bunch of self important bouncers scream in people's faces then this is the place for you. The extremely shallow staff hand picks hot girls out of the crowd and lets them cut the line and will literally push you to the side if your a guy who's not buying a bottle or an ugly/fat girl. If you get there after 11 PM and you are a guy good luck on getting in because it will take about an hour of waiting. The club itself isn't bad but the pictures online make it look a lot nicer than it does in person. It is very dark and feels like a maze. You cant really find the exit or the bathrooms and its easy to get lost or lose someone in there. Bottom line, if your not buying a bottle or know someone or didn't get kicked off some reality show last week then your not going to get in. Once you finally do get in and realize how obnoxious that whole scene is your going to want to leave.

Ya know? Every once in a while you find out a little more about your parents, and through that, you discover something about yourself. Take, for example, my mom. Sometimes fiery, often restless but always radiant, it was her birthday and I discovered--actually more so confirmed; that she likes to paaaaaartay. I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised as: The apple doesn't fall very from the tree. XIV was a last minute choice. I had wanted something classy, a little savoir faire. Having seen Mina's in San Francisco (although never having made it into the restaurant because of various scheduling conflicts that always came up), I thought XIV was going to be similar. As soon as we walked in, however, I realized I had probably picked a place that was a little bit more "lively" and "clubby" than I had expected. Although the interior is--as another rateclubser ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...) pointed out, designed along the lines of a European library (I checked, and all the books were even in a foreign language, LOL), the music is hip and the scene is definitely that of an older, more moneyed crowd (30's+, with some cougars roaming the edge of the herd to pick off the strays). Yes folks, some of these guys are your typical Hollywood douches, and of course their dining companions were mostly tit-curtain* wearing, bleached blondes that seem to infect the Hollywood area. Well, at least they wore nice heels. * http://www.thebestpage...(My tip for men: do not ask, or even joke with a woman wearing this dress, whether she's pregnant unless: (1) she tells you she is pregnant, (2) you got her pregnant, or (3) you see a baby coming out of her vagina at the moment. My tip for women: if you are going to wear this, go buy a muu-muu, it's a lot cheaper, and gives you the same effect). I was not surprised to see that my dad seemed a bit overwhelmed and a little uneasy. However, my mom immediately brightened up and I could tell she was very fascinated by the place and immediately comfortable. As we were horribly late for our reservation, the hostess politely asked us to wait at the bar for the next opening. Angelina, the lovely bartender that she was, really made my parents feel at home and chatted them up as I took the opportunity to check out their drink and wine list and order a wine for my mom (an Australian Grenache). My mom mildly chided my dad for wanting to order a beer (which, funny enough, was what I was thinking of ordering). I ended up saving both of us and ordering: -English Breakfast: Plymouth, Contreau, Apricot Marmalade, Fresh Lemonade. (at little too sweet) -Scottish Mule: Hendrick's Cucumber, Fresh Lime, Ginger Beer. (refreshing) -Caipirinha: Weber Haus (Rum), Muddled Lime, Demerara Sugar. (I liked this the best, although I would ask for a little less sugar less time) As my parents and I chatted about random things, time flew by while we waited for the table. Plus, they brought some of their bread with yogurt dip. When we finally got to the table, here's what we ordered: -Shellfish Bay Scallops Tempura, Cauliflower, Passion Fruit, Almonds -Dungeness Crab Spring Roll, Avocado, Cumin, Roasted Jalapeno -Pumpkin Dumplings, Stewed Cherries, Brown Butter, Sage -Sake & Maple-Cured Kanpachi, Apple, Cippolini Onions, Shiso -Foie Gras Terrine, Cranberry, Cardamom, Greek Yogurt, Flatbread -Roasted Venison, Onion, Brussels Sprouts, Huckleberry -Idiazabal, Dates, Smoked Bacon Powder, Pedro Ximénez -Hazelnut Milk, Frosted Flakes, Whiskey Barrel Ice Cream Suffice it to say that the presentations were fabulous, but the food was not up to the same level. It veered too much towards the sweet side. I won't go into an in-depth analysis of each dish, as there is an extensive write-up here: http://www.kevineats.c... Food: 3.5-stars Service: 4.5-stars On the fence as to whether I would come back again. Much better food to be found at the various restaurants in the Melrose/La Brea area. But it was worth every penny to see my ma beaming on her birthday. Happy birthday, ma!

Note: this is just about the restaurant. After hearing from a friend for months about the restaurant at Yoshi's, I decided to check it out for myself. I went with two friends during Dine About Town (6/08), but from the looks of it, most of the items we ordered off of the special DAT menu are on the everyday Yoshi's menu as well. The other two had already been to the bar, so we decided to just order tea at the table. For a Japanese restaurant they had a very small tea selection and the green tea we ended up ordering wasn't very good. I was able to move past this when my appetizer arrived. The kakiage (vegetable tempura fritters) were delicious. I'd only ever had tempura where the vegetables were dipped and fried individually, so I really enjoyed having lots of different kinds of vegetable strips in each bite. If only my enthusiasm had continued with my entrée. It was chicken served with enoki mushrooms, asparagus, and a plum glaze. It was probably thigh meat, which I don't normally eat anyways, but it had the skin on and was very fatty. Plus, there were some green leaves sitting on top of the chicken that I thought I'd try (I'm working on being a more adventurous eater), that turned out to taste very soapy. Altogether, the dish, which wasn't big to start with, was pretty unpleasant and left me unsatisfied. The meal was somewhat salvaged by the desserts. Two of us ordered the chocolate cake with beet ice cream (the cake was good and the odd-sounding ice cream was a surprisingly nice compliment) and the other ordered an apricot dish, which was also tasty. The service was just as inconsistent as the food. Sometimes we were very well attended and at other times we couldn't track down our waiter. Overall, the ambiance is lovely (though they could play more jazz music in the restaurant), but the inconsistency of everything else, especially given the high price of everything, would make me hesitate before going back again.
