Restaurant week lunch at Zahav is a real treat. There are a wealth of options to choose from (10 appetizers and 6 entrees), which is rare for restaurant week. The service was impeccable - our waiter was incredibly patient while our party arrived (we didn't order until at least 40 minutes after we sat down) and gave a detailed explanation of each dish as it came out. The meal began with a selection of salads (beet, cucumber, carrot, and cabbage), hummus, and pita. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted just as good. The hummus and pita were freshly made and were the perfect start to the meal. For my first course, I had fried cauliflower with a chive, dill, mint, and garlic sauce. The portion was huge (a pleasant surprise for an appetizer) and the delicious sauce perfectly complimented the lightly fried cauliflower. My chicken confit with couscous was also delicious (moist meat and crisp skin) and beautifully presented. For dessert, I had hazelnut and date rugelach which came with sachlab, a hot drink of steamed milk and some sort of apple caramel mixture. The rugelach was fine (but not amazing) and the sachlab was just too sweet and perfumed - it really felt like drinking potpourri. At the end of our meal, our waiter gave us all $10 off coupons that could be used at Zahav and its sister restaurants (Xochitl and Percy Street Barbeque) - I would have come back sans coupon, but now I'm even more excited to go back!

Hard to judge from my order of a soup and a salad...the wait during lunch was annoyingly long, since I had to get back to the office. Spinach salad was plain, w/ eggs, since I ordered without the bacon. The soup, gumbo, was ok but not great...I liked the consistency but not the spice combination. Server was hovering when I didn't want him to be and nowhere to be found when we wanted water refills and the bill. Location in Grant Park overlooking the cemetery was cool, though the parking lot was not big enough.

I didn't eat at Amalia; I'm reviewing for the late night lounge/dancing downstairs. The DJ alone would have gotten 5 stars. He was actually a dj...no Mac laptop in sight, and he kept a high energy mix of hip hop, reggae, and a sprinkling of house coming all night. Where the place goes wrong is... They let way too many people in for the small space, and there is no dance floor, so while you're trying to dance you really end up shuffling here and there as people pass you to get to the bar, to their friends, to the bathroom, to anywhere but where they are. And there seemed to be an abundance of girls with day-sized purses on. Ladies- what happened to a nice clutch or wristlet for evening? My friends and I all but got black and blues from being constantly hit in the back with huge bags hanging from the shoulders of dancing girls. Second bad point: my standard Grey Goose & club soda: $14!!! I wonder how much a martini was... Third, and worst of all: there was a crowd of people who insisted on smoking. They were clearly from Long Island...maybe you're still allowed to smoke in bars out there? The bouncer seemed to either not care or not notice, but someone needed to tell these people that they were in Manhattan, not Massapequa. Besides, lighting a match next to all that hair gel was probably a personal safety hazard. I would go back just for the dj, because he was THAT good, but the rest of the place I could do without.
