FINALLY got to Yoshis SF last night to see George Clinton and the P Funk. (We need the funk, gotta have that funk). The Oakland Yoshis has been my go to spot for YEARS and when I heard a SF version was opening up, I was really excited. Then, I waited. And waited. And WAITED for a good act to show up that I couldn't see in Oakland. So glad I went. I am a vegetarian, so the food reviews part of this marvelous tome of data will be a little light on the fish and land animals...sorry guys. SF Yoshis has, in contrast to Oakland, a SRO ticket option. Since I booked my tickets late, could only get SRO and was a bit disgruntled (can I actually BE gruntled?) because I thought I'd want to be a super whitey and sit down while GC and the P Funk got their groove on. How wrong I was. SRO is the WAY to go for dance and funk and groove acts at SF. the SRO area is large and right up agains the stage, so you get amazing views of the band. The mgmt doesn't seem to overbook it either, so I didn't feel like I was getting a TSA body patdown on the dance floor. The views of Sir Nos' excellent twelve pack body was worth the price of admission right there. Since this was a last minute thing for me, I also didn't really focus on where to have dinner, so I opted for Yoshis lounge and thought I'd order off the lounge menu. Happily surprised to find that they offer a full dinner menu from the lounge. Massive. I got: French bean tenpura Wild, in season mushroom tenpura Ocean seaweed salad, minus the bonito flakes Kappa/avocado maki roll Veggie roll....STANDOUT yummy French fries and sweet potato fries with pesto aoili I got my drink on as well and because I had two hours before the show, ended up with the following cocktails: Saketini cocktail Ruby, my dear Miles ahead Weather report (great version of a dark n stormy) Billies holiday Classic margharita All delicious butmy favorites were the weather report and ruby, my dear. The lounge/bar area is very comfortable and the service was prompt, friendly and efficient. The ambiance is really warm and the curve to the bar is pleasing. The GC P Funk show was amazing. Got into the show about 15 minutes before the start, stood right up front next to the stage. At one point, I counted 19 people on stage. Amazing. 26 different musicians throughout the night, rotating in and out. A mind blowing, face melting solo by Michael Hampton on guitar at one point. He was wearing a lucha libre face mask. Awesome. George brought his son and his granddaughter on stage and they each did a rap/funk fusion thing and they are both damn talented. Tons of very white people in the audience...cracked me up when at one point, GC was looking for a joint and about ten white hands reached out and offered him some blunts...he took them, smoked them and then passed them around the stage and the audience. Yoshis SF also has an upper seating deck, which is really nice if you're going to see a show where you don't want to dance and just want to drink, listen and chill. I will be back soon!

Philly is no stranger to meat slinging quasi-celebrity chefs whose food generates long and unpleasant lines ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...). So in an odd way I liked the idea of Bobby Flay coming to Philly (Although something like a Mesa Grill would have been a hell of a lot cooler.), And especially liked the fact that it made Philly one of the very few cities to have three Iron Chefs inside of it. But overall, much like Jose Garces wipes the floor with Bobby Flay inside Kitchen Stadium, I found that Philly has a lot homegrown burger joints that do what the Burger Palace does a whole lot better. Overall Bobby's does deliver a solid burger, and some even better milkshakes (the Vanilla Caramel Bourbon shake floored me over how good it was). But, as you may often expect with a spot like it, it relies more on the hype and marketabilty of the Flay name, rather than actual good food and service. And while they do have some cool things to go along with it, like the Burger of the Month and spiked shakes, they don't have enough of them and they aren't that well thought out. Go to PYT and chow down on their Burger of the Week while washing it down with Diplo's Key Lime Pie shake and you might taste what I'm talking about. The novelty of stylizing their burger menu after certain cities is kind of cool. But figuring out what ingredients best represents Chicago, and crunchifying burgers with potato chips is nowhere near as good as the love and creativity that somewhere like Sketch puts into their menu. When it comes to things like that Bob's Big Burger falls flat on its ass. Another flaw I have with the Burger Palace is the assembly line mentality of it. Wait in a super long line, pay burger drone up front, sit in oversized tables with many people you may not know, wait for different burger drones to bring your food and drink, have other burger drones constantly check on you while you try to eat, then get up and leave. Don't think about trying to order another drink because the pay bot is at the whole other side of the building! And as you can imagine it leads to some awkward moments when it isn't executed properly. My burger arrived before my shake and I had 3 drones check on me without the shake before it arrived, making me want it even more. the person sitting at the spot I was in before me was drinking water and the drones failed to pick up the glass before I sat down. So I had burger drones constantly asking me if I wanted a water refill, which filled me with gross thoughts. So overall while Bobby's is a novel experience that brings along some pluses, its also one that isn't without its downfalls. And now I just heard from a good source that, although it's at a prime college location and serves alcohol, it closes at 9pm on a weekday? Weak!
