Granted I was really only there for about an hour before we had to leave, so I feel like I should maybe come here again before reviewing, but MEH! So here it goes. General impression of the place is it's tiny and almost quaint. Nicely decorated. The bottom floor is definitely small, but it wasn't that crowded when we were there, so the deathly heat that everyone seems to talk about was definitely not an issue. Music was decent, but drinks were expensive. Other than that, it was just kind of ho-hum. Nothing extraordinarily good or bad about the place. Major plus, there's no cover. Also a plus, parking around there wasn't too difficult.

This place has been reviewed to death so I'll just throw my $.02 on the pile. I think the food is excellent, the tacos and burritos are fresh and tasty but they, as many people will point out, do not compare well to the very best of the Mission. However, Nick's more than makes up for this in convenience. It's also co-located with Rouge bar / nightclub, and that's where you have to watch out. Rouge is, I think, one of the Harry Denton's clubs, and lives up to the superficial flossy glitz and glamor that his name implies. However, it does make for great people watching on the corner late at night as ladies in cocktail dresses twitter among the Polk street torn jeans crowd. If you go here for Taco Tuesday (no special deals, just a popular night... if you want discount yet tasty tacos on Tuesday go to Blue Light on Union), the place is PACKED. It also becomes all about scene and not really about the food (which will take forever to get and you'll never find a place to sit). It also looks, worryingly, more and more like the popped-collar crowd is invading. Bartenders have generally been friendly and as prompt as the crowds allow. However, on this last trip I was served 3 chipped/cracked pint glasses in a row. You'd think after, you know, 2 in a row you might want to check?!? I think I went down a notch in the bartenders eyes for bringing this up but whatever. Pros: good vibe, great food, friendly service Cons: food is cash only, it goes insane on Tuesdays (this could be a good thing if you're a scene-watcher).

While I'm not the biggest socialite, I have indeed been to many of the clubs in Atlanta. MJQ is great and different because the crowd is as diverse and varied as the music. I like to go on Wednesday nights because the vibe is positive, and everyone seems to be having a genuinely good time. Friday nights are nice too when they play hip hop and reggae--it's just it can get pretty packed and tempers sometimes flare. Overall, it's a great time, and no pretensions. You can go in t-shirt and sneakers or the latest trends and not feel out of place either way. EDIT 6.19.2008 - Retro neon sunglasses--mini chinese dragon parade--dancing the night away....I love it here.
