The top reasons to go to El Rio: 1. Pool table and weird shuffle board curling game. You know what I'm talking about. 2. Your friends are there, plus potential friends you haven't met yet. 3. Cheap beer, if you're down on your dollar you can pick up a cheap PBR and never think twice. 4. Fabulous, huge back patio which also sometimes serves burgers? Oh yeahhhhh. 5. Extremely small side room with very loud and raunchy punk and metal bands. 6. Good jukebox. 7. This truly is YOUR dive.

While I'm not the biggest socialite, I have indeed been to many of the clubs in Atlanta. MJQ is great and different because the crowd is as diverse and varied as the music. I like to go on Wednesday nights because the vibe is positive, and everyone seems to be having a genuinely good time. Friday nights are nice too when they play hip hop and reggae--it's just it can get pretty packed and tempers sometimes flare. Overall, it's a great time, and no pretensions. You can go in t-shirt and sneakers or the latest trends and not feel out of place either way. EDIT 6.19.2008 - Retro neon sunglasses--mini chinese dragon parade--dancing the night away....I love it here.

As far as dive bars are concerned, one bar in this city may well lord over all of them. No, it is not located in the Tenderloin or cleverly hidden in the Sixth Street neighborhood known for hard-up bars and restaurants. The best dive bar this city doesnt know may very well be located in the Sunset on Taraval. That bar is known as Grandma's Saloon. Walk through the half door that swings inward and you will see the long curvy wooden bar, single pool table, cinder block walls and likely one of the friendliest, yet goofiest bartenders around. Drink prices are cheap and super stiff and they even have that trivia game where you can play strip photo hunt. Come in to play local pool sharks that will almost assuredly kick your ass or to watch your favorite sporting event. Talk up the bartender, but dont come here for the atmosphere. Next time you stumble out of the Shannon Arms up the street, go down Taraval to Grandma's and you will not be dissapointed.
