I have to say, the Clermont Lounge did not live up to the hype. I went last night for the first time with some out-of-towners. Maybe we were early. I would go back, the drinks were good and reasonably priced. Just wasn't the freak-show I was expecting.

Ah, Oscars, my favorite bar to frequent when I lived in Center City. I'm not a beer drinker so I couldn't take advantage of those tall glasses of beer this place is famous for. I love indulging in rum & coke and long island iced teas. The music is good, I think I've been there on nights where they've played a full Rage Against the Machine album. On the weekend, it's hard to walk in here, as the tables are all full and the bar is crowded with people. The booths in the back are my favorite, since the tables in the middle can make me feel claustrophobic and wary of sitting too close to strangers. The bar food is decent, it's hard to mess up chicken fingers, though.

I was trying to put my finger on why I enjoyed being here and it dawned on me that I had actual conversations last night. Not yelling, nodding, distracted and generally miscommunicated conversation but actually funny, getting to know you conversations. Yes, the music is very low in both the dining and bar area, however there is billiard lounge with soft deep house playing. This isn't the place to rage...it's a place to just chill. The staff was friendly - the only thing is that it seems they're working out the kinks. The space isn't super big and contains a small dining room, a bar, and the billiard lounge- all with spaces that need to be reserved. The nicoise salad and steak tartare were very yummy and quite traditional but freshly and well made. I ordered the maine lobster pot pie, but the order got lost on the way to the kitchen (again...kinks) so I'll have to come back and try it. All and all I think like fine wine this place will age with time. A
