by Keila Moskwa on This place is amazing. It's literally just an old boat docked on an old pier with dancing, alcohol, and plenty of near-overboards. The boat has a downstairs dancing room, made all the more fun by the swaying tide. There is a little window with a guy behind it that serves as a mini satellite bar. You can explore the whole place - even the dangerous parts. Makes you wonder about liability issues. The main bar is in the middle of the pier and serves up bottle and draft beers as well as seafaring staples like greasy fries and oysters, etc. You can get a bucket of beers for pretty cheap. And the bartendresses snap off the bottle caps like their lives depend on it. The end of the pier is actually covered by an upstairs deck (also scary) with amazing views of the Hudson, Downtown, and Jersey. Downstairs at the very end of the pier is a raised stage for performances. Even though the place was pretty full on the weekend night I went, it's big enough that you can pretty easily carve out a few tables for a large group. Drinking on a boat without leaving the city.
by Le Greenidge on Tuesday: I had no idea what Vessel was or where it was located Thursday: I'm there watching Stringer Bell from "The Wire" spin House Friday: I'm back again for dancing to celebrate a friend's bday Maybe I just got lucky but those two experiences were pretty good! Thursday night: The club was pretty empty when we got there but it slowly filled up and the crowd was pretty chill. The $5 cover was a fair exchange for being able to brag to my friends that I was standing 10ft away from Stringer Bell, and our Jack & Cokes were dangerously strong. Friday night: We weren't on the guestlist so we had to wait in line for maybe 10 mins and then pay a $20 cover but once inside the music was just what I wanted (a little Usher, a little "This Is How We Do It," etc), the bartenders were fairly friendly and attentive (even with the crowd), and the bathrooms were clean (without a huge line)!
by James L. on I must admit I am surprised by all the negative reviews. It's really not that bad of a venue when you think about it. It's convenient and spacious. As most have pointed out, the sound system may be subpar, but I'm usually in the front drowning in the lead singer's saliva and sweat so to be honest I haven't appreciated the difference. Also, perhaps because of the size of the venue and popularity of bands that play here, the fans seem more energetic here, more than a few times I seriously thought the balcony was going to cave in. The one thing that does irk me the most here is the loud clang of beer bottles being tossed into the trash throughout the shows. My god, you'd think Roger Clemens was back there bartending. True, I've seen a lot more shows at Bowery and like most I prefer it to Webster Hall. In fact, I like almost all other venues more, with the exception of maybe Irving Plaza, where I am usually forced to stand behind one of the beams. Having said that, I've seen some great shows here though, so I'm giving it a five. I was introduced to Iron & Wine's Trapeze Swinger at this venue, how could I possibly give it less than a five? Hope Okkervil River has a great show here tomorrow.
