I visited the China Pearl Lounge quite frequently in my years in town. The atmosphere is very welcoming, quiet most days in daytime until the locals arrive for Happy Hour and again from 9 until closing. The drinks are expertly made and the beer selection is pretty standard. All the food in the restaurant downstairs is available for order in the lounge, which sits on the 2nd floor and offers a commanding view of the ferry dock, bay and surrounding islands. A pool table room is in the front and a great collection of bands play most Friday or Saturday nights. Staff are very warm and friendly. A great local hangout w/widescreen TV for the big games!

I celebrated my 8th wedding anniversary at XIV last night, and the service, the food and then ambience could not have been improved upon even one iota. They manage a perfect balance between luxury, pampering and elegance. We both noted that there us not a bad seat in the house, no sucky table back by the swinging doors. And Michael Mina makes serious food, this is not a nightclub. People come here for a culinary experience, not to do shots a la Coconut Teazer, and not the dance the night away in a cocaine and booze filled haze hoping Paris Hilton walks by. This are serious fewd, for serious fewdies. They knew it was our anniversary, so they greeted us at our fireside table with a "Happy Anniversary" card and a complimentary glass of champagne. Our server was among the more talented of servers I have had the pleasure of spending time with in Los Angeles and he didn't behave like an actor. Yay! We splurged for the 11 course tasting menu, and although I literally rolled out of there like Violet Beauregarde, every morsel was delicious. In the end, they were even kind enough to do a cheese course instead of a dessert course because I don't like dessert! I cannot believe my triumph in this area. I love cheese, dessert bores me. And what a cheese course! I have never had a better cheese course, ever! In terms of new restaurants in LA, I think I actually prefer The Bazaar to XIV, but not by much.
