by Stephanie K. on When you walk down Biscayne Blvd in South Beach, it's a little awkward, because all of the various restaurants' dining rooms are essentially on the sidewalk. This means that you can't walk down the sidewalk without being accosted by hostesses offering you "Deals" to eat at their restaurant. And it means that you can't dine on the sidewalk without having tons of people walking by you. After a long walk down the road and being accosted by numerous hostesses shoving menus in our face, we finally found a Cuban restaurant. Why was it so hard to find a Cuban restaurant in South Beach? Maybe we just weren't looking in the right places, because it took us over an hour on foot to find this place, and I'll admit I was a little disappointed at first, since it was Bongo's, and I could have gone to Bongo's any time I wanted to at Downtown Disney since I was living in Orlando (but never went to the Orlando location) I'm not really familiar with Cuban food, but I did try to order things that I wouldn't be able to find at other restaurants. We had a weird potato appetizer that was really delicious! It was like, deep fried mashed potatoes or something. Yum. At least thats what it TASTED like. For my entree I had some fried chicken that was in a sauce over rice and served with fried plantains. Also really delicious! All of my friends' meals looked good, too. I found the prices to be reasonable for the location, and the service was definitely top-notch. I think the great service can be attributed to the fact that in South Beach most restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity, no matter what your party size is. (Bongo's also added the automatic gratuity) Overall, I thought Bongo's was really good! I was a little disappointed that we didn't end up at a Mom and Pop type place for dinner, but so it goes.
by Aletheia W. on ok, so really. how can you go wrong with burgers? i guess it's a just little absurd to me that people dress up to eat a burger. or that people choose to drink a glass of pricey wine instead of say, a root beer float with their burger. speaking of which, their rootbeer float is too pricey for what you get.... at any rate, i took my brother to eat here once upon a time, for kicks and giggles. see what all the hype is about. we were actually seated really quickly on a busy night, and quickly ordered our burgers. they were good. that goes without saying. and i really enjoyed the decor and the fries in the mini shopping cart! yes, something so ridiculous it is adorable. i don't really like having to order fries separate, because i think they should just come with your burger, but i digress. the burgers were juicy, came out fast and piping hot, cooked to our specifications, and surprisingly, not too much more expensive than my childhood fave, red robbins. ok fine, at least their fries had yummalicious dipping sauces. i'd go again, just not on a busy night. and maybe i'd dress up a little more. but then i'd feel crazy - like, why am i wearing a dress to eat a burger? but i do like those fancy-schmancy burgers... i guess i can suck it up.
