This used to be Conga Room, and I think I liked it better back then.  Now, there's a game room with 2 pool tables, among other lame stuff, where you get a bunch of teenie boppers playing them because they're sick of going to Dave and Busters. At about 12ish, though, at the dance room where they used to have salsa, they have a live band playing the 80's cover songs.  The band is pretty awesome, but I heard from people that they only play on Fridays because Friday is supposedly the 80's night.  Could've fooled me because the DJ played hip-hop through most of the nights, as I recall. Drinks were fair-- nothing to rage or brag over. 5 dollar parking. Staffs are uberly friendly. Not a mixed club, as 60% were Asians, most of which were younger than 25.  The rest of the older mixed group of people were there for the 80's bands.

Nothing could have made my recent new loft purchase in Mount Clemens better than when I saw that they were converting the old Mount Clemens Federal Savings and Loan building across the street into a night club. However, I did not expect "The Bank" to be the swanky highlight of southeast Michigan's "eastside" that it has turned into! This is truly one of the hottest bars in Michigan and is currently the place to be and be seen. I will start with the architecture. The building itself was always a unique treasure in an otherwise drab area, even when it was just a bank. Now, it almost seems as though it was originally designed to be a nightlife destination, with an appealing decor and sweeping roof that draws your attention as you drive by. The interior is minimalistic in approach, but well organized. There are three full service bars, with two upstairs on the main level and one downstairs next to the underground outdoor patio. There are stylish couches and seating areas throughout, though most of them are for reservations, which are usually booked a week or two in advance. The club offers a nice elevated VIP area over the dance floor and bottle service. There is a medium size dance floor in the middle of the main level, though dancing is not the primary purpose of this club. This is definitely a place to be seen! I love the outdoor patios that wrap from the west side of the building to the east side, with a separate patio downstairs. Since "The Bank" opened in May 2008, it has drawn impressive crowds every Friday and Saturday nights (the only days of business) and has been drawing people from all over Wayne, Macomb, Oakland and surrounding counties. It is considered an upscale establishment, so the attire is "dress to impress", though it has garnished an unfair reputation of having too strict of a dress code. The only requirements are: "No Athletic Apparel, No Hats and No White T-Shirts". That's it, nothing more. Basically, as long as you look presentable, you're going to get in. At $10 per person, cover is modest for an upscale club and they make up for it with reasonably priced drinks. The atmosphere is trendy and fun, at times pretentious and chic, but usually energized and interesting. The only negative I can state about this bar is that it can be TOO crowded at times, especially after midnight. Navigating from one end of the bar to another can be difficult when it is packed, though (surprisingly) the lines for the restrooms are never that long. If you are looking to talk to members of the opposite sex, this is the place to be. At times, it seems that every attractive woman in the midwest is there! Anyone who has visited clubs in Miami, South Beach or parts of Los Angeles will find this club very similar in style and clientele. This is without a doubt my favorite upscale bar in Michigan (at the moment) and has become a regular spot for my friends and I on any given weekend!!!

Sugar Cafe has a great layout with stylish yet comfortable furniture, bartenders who are friendly and attentive, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.  As a coffee shop with a full bar, I love it, but there comes a time for every establishment when a decision has to be made. If you are going to be a cafe, don't arrange tables so that all light is blocked when one leans the slightest bit.  It really isn't suitable for the three Rs (Reading, wRiting and dRawing).  On the other hand, if you are going to be a lounge, lose the bright lights altogether.  Your intense, yet poorly arranged lighting is like the military's "Don't Ask/Don't Tell" policy.  In trying to appease conflicting interests, ultimately nobody is happy. There is a fantastic video system projecting on the upper front windows that can be watched from inside and out, but I have to wonder, since it was running without sound, why not show something funky instead of the movie "300"?  That block of Sutter is swarming with art and film students who I am certain would leap at the opportunity to create or curate a video montage in exchange for a couple of beers. I can't speak to the quality of cocktails, but the bubbly must be good, because I heard them pop 4 bottles in the hour or so I was there, and the place wasn't that crowded, as it was a Sunday evening.  The beer selection is shameful and there are no taps, but they have this fantastic little machine that either vibrates or irradiates a head into your lifeless canned Guinness.  Still a poor substitute for draft beer, but as I treat Sugar as a coffee shop and not a bar, it is still a step above the rest.
