XIV is proof that snooty Hollywood club creators (SBE) and restaurants do not mix. Don't get me wrong - I love SBE club venues, but when it comes to fine dining, the food should speak for itself, and image just doesn't cut it. There are plenty of reviews on this place, so here are just a few random comments I have: - The hostesses were hot but downright rude. I arrived on time only to be told that my party could not be seated until the final member had arrived, and when she arrived less than 5 minutes later, I was told that I had to wait while our table was prepared. While my entire party was waiting to be seated, a group the same size as mine walked in and was promptly seated in one of the best spots in the house (by the fire). We were finally seated without any apology or explanation at a crap table right next to the kitchen and next to an open door with a draft coming through. - All of the best restaurants I have been to leave me feeling pleasantly full, not bloated. The portions at XIV were way too large. The tataki of wagyu was an appetizer but was the size of a medium steak. The tapioca on the tai snapper, combined with the crispy rice, was way too heavy and dry. I'm not sure why two ingredients with such similar textures would be placed on the same plate. - What is up with the decor/theme? Why are there mustaches painted on the murals outside? What do the waiters' suspenders have to do with Louis the XIV? Is the theme even Louis the XIV, because I don't think they had lucite lamps during that era. None of this makes any sense and everything just had the air of "trying too hard." - Lastly, XIV is overpriced. You can get better food for less money at hundreds of restaurants in LA; here, what you are really paying for is the SBE name and image. Overall, my entire party left the restaurant feeling bloated, slighted, and ripped off. And that was with the DineLA menu. I'm just grateful that I didn't get the "Fourteen from XIV" selection that Urbandaddy was raving about a few months ago.

my favorite club of all time because of its great location, different rooms- all have a diff atmosphere so it's really great to find one that suits you. i'd stray away from the main walk in floor though- this is where they play the cheesy music that your mom dances to. i love downstairs and upstairs though. and they have a great coactcheck.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE 1984 on Thursdays at the Cat Club. I really think this is the best place and night to dance in the city. The crowd is extremely diverse in age, ethnicity, salary and class. Everyone is there to get their 80's on, and I love how strangers seem to bond over a little Salt N Pepa and Tainted Cell. Even the straight guys are singing to old Madonna. While it's obvious that some folks are there to hook up, I've never had an issue with pushy or machismo guys. In fact, when I tell guys that I'm taken they've either said "that's cool" or politely bounced in another girl's direction. This is also the only club in the city where I have seen folks in wheelchairs on the dance floor. That rocks! Also, you can't beat a $6 cover!
